you put Ox-Bo and High Noon. I can't believe I left them out! I love all the Anthony Mann Jommy Stewart ones as well. Blazing Saddles is great especially since I love Destry. Great response FrankGrimes.

There's no doubt about that. And the majority hate to rank anything.

I think they are terrific westerns. I like psychological films as a rule, and Mann's westerns feature a great deal of psychology.

 

*Blazing Saddles is great especially since I love Destry.*

 

I'm a big fan of *Blazing Saddles*, as well. It's just that I have a classic/contemporary divide at the 70s. I definitely got a kick out of *Destry Rides Again* since I had seen *Blazing Saddles* first.

Movieman has the list I most agree with. Cigarjoe throws in *The* *Bravados* with is very much underrated but a gem.

 

It's interesting that MissGoddess lists a tie between *High Noon* and *Rio Bravo* as from other posts they a supposed to be political opposites of each other. I don't buy into that as I see both Will and John T. as lawmen who are willing to uphold it because that's who they are and what they do even if they must do it alone. Will pretty much does while John T. has an unlikely but lovable bunch who are there when he needs them. I never tire of either.

How about a few that hardly, if ever makes anyone's list:

 

"Four Faces West"

Joel McCrea and real wife Francis Dee star in this beautiful and up lifting little film. Costarring the wonderful Joseph Calleia and Charles Bickford as Pat Garrett..

 

"Branded"

A under rated and rarely seen Alan Ladd oater. Outside of "Shane" one of Ladd's best in glorious Technicolor. Again with co-stars Charles Bickford and Joseph Calleia.

 

"Ranrod"

Joel McCrea and Veronica Lake in a true film noir western. Dark and moody with some wonderful supporting actors.

 

"Western Union"

Fritz Lang's beautiful Technicolor epic with Randolph {chorus please} Scott in an almost William S. Hart role. A minor classic.

 

"Canyon Passage"

Director Jacques Toureur directed Dana Andrews and Susan Hayward in a strange western that gets better with each viewing if you can find it. A haunting film at times.

I've seen *Ramrod, Western Union* and *Canyon Passage* and liked them all; I'll check out the other two as I like Ladd and always enjoy watching Joel and Frances together.

 

*Canyon Passage* is interesting as it shows settlers working together to make the new communities a success. Of course it only takes one bad apple to ruin things and here we have two olds pros in Ward Bond and Brian Donlevy with Bond getting a lot of blood on his hands.

 

*Western Union* is worth it as well. With Scott you know what you're getting and it's not a waste of time. Robert Young is an Eastern newcomer and fits his role well.

 

*Ramrod* is different but entertaining. I'd never seen a woman in a Western vilian-type role before and Veronica Lake was just right. There is a "good girl" to balance it all out, I think it's Arleen Whelan. If the others are good as these three I have some movies to watch.
