Have you ever seen a scary movie that just scared you to death. Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte and Wizard of Oz were my first two movies that really scared me. I was young when I saw both. Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte where the head was rolled down the stairs. My sisters did that to me whenever I would be sassy to them knowing I would go into a fit. Wizard of Oz which is such a classic but the flying monkeys and of course the wicked witch would scare me to death. My mother always brings up that she was ironing and I would run and sit by her feet everytime the monkeys and witch would start. So I really didn't appreciate that movie when I was young. One of my favorites now. As I got older it was the first Halloween movie that scared me. I was in highschool and my friend that was driving decided to go into a cemetary afterwards. Not thinking that she was driving and we all could duck down. She wished she hadn't done that.

Hi All,

When I was a child my parents also would never allow me to watch horror/scary movies either films or TV. They tried to monitor (at home) what I saw very closely.

However, like you classicmovies434 I remember watching The Wizard of Oz when I was real little and crying when the flying monkeys came on and I remember being scared whenever the wicked witch showed up; it was pretty traumatic for me as a kid. I remember burying my eyes in my mom's shirt. That is the earliest I remember being scared to near death. It seems silly now as an adult watching it. My poor parents probably thought they had made a mistake letting me see it.

The next scary/horror movie I remember is having nightmares when I was about 14 because I went to a girlfriends house for a sleep over and she had rented The Exorcist. All the girls watched The Exorcist ( and of course I wanted to be cool) when I was about 14 and this was the first Horror movie I had ever been exposed to. The next day when my mom picked me up I told her how I didn't sleep and she just looked at me with that mom look and explained to me "there are some things you can never 'unsee'. Now maybe you understand why we don't let you see that stuff." I had nightmares for a long time after that.

I didn't watch another Horror/Scary film until I was married many years later.

My husband and I watched a movie called Citizen X with Donald Sutherland which scared the **** outta me. I vowed never to do it again. That movie made me sick.

I have a fifteen year old sister now who has been raised very similar to me in that our parents monitor very closely what she watches. Recently , her and I have gotten into Alfred Hitchcock films. I think that's the level of scared we can handle. Lol.

The first scary movie I saw was in the theater in 1943 at the tender age of nine!! With my two aunts for protection I watched FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN. Strangely, I was more frightened in later years as an adult by The Haunting and The Exorcist.

Why Is Everyone Scared Of The Wizard Of OZ?? Lol Even As a Little Boy, I Loved It. Margreat Hamilton Was The Perfect Witch, And There will Never Be Another Great Actress To Take Her Place,As A Witch That Is. The Only Film That Scared The socks Off Of Me Was The Exorcist, Talk about A Scary Film OUCH LOL. I Look Foward To Other Replys On This subjet.Hope to Hear What Other Say. Sincerly, Xxmass.

I remember it well! It was a 3200 seat theater that I worked in quite a few years later. My first scary movie was one of those Mummy sequels where he was reaching out with his right hand and dragging his left foot as he made his way down the road. We all ran into the Men's room until the scene was over. Quite scarry at the time but really funny when I watch it today.

I see that xxmass mentions THE EXORCIST, and when I finally saw it as a teen, it was and remains the most frightening film I've probably seen. But I can see someone being frightened by THE WIZARD OF OZ, because if you are seeing it for the first time at age four or five, well, Margaret Hamilton was pretty scary. The first film I remember seeing that really gave me the creeps was THE MOLE PEOPLE. With Hugh Beaumont, no less! I realize that it is a low-budget b-movie from the 50's, but when I saw it at around five years old in the late 60's, it gave me nightmares.

I don't know how well the film stands up today, because I haven't seen it since then. I just remember these creatures lived underground, and they attacked and enslaved an archaeological expedition inside (or was it under?) a mountain. This is only significant, because as a child, the family would spend a week in the Ozarks each summer, which was an idyllic place in my youth. Until, of course, Branson, Missouri, and much of the Ozarks became the commercialized, Hillbilly Vegas that it is today.

Anyway, one of the places we would always visit is called Meramec Caverns. It's still there and is a series of caves that you can explore and tour. So, we went there merely days after I saw THE MOLE PEOPLE. As we were exploring these caverns, their were areas where there were significant drops, which were fenced off, but you could still look deep into them, and yes, my five year old imagination was CONVINCED the evil Mole People were down there, waiting to capture us! So, compounded to the fear that I experienced seeing that movie, I now had these cold, deep, dark caverns to contend with. Suffice it to say, I didn't sleep well for days after that!

So, movies DO have import on a child's imagination. If I were to see THE MOLE PEOPLE today, I would probably find it humorous. But there is a small part of me that thinks it might bring back some frightful memories. I still don't know why THAT film frightened me as much as it did, because at that age, I had already seen some of those wonderful Universal Horror films of the 30's and 40's. Who knows?

Heck I was scared of the Wicked Witch and her flying monkeys and those who weren't are lying!!!! I also used to get scared at those Ray Harryhausen movies. Now that I'm older it seems so lame but when I was about 7 or 8 and saw those Sinbad movies I was scared.

The very first scary movie I remember ever seeing was JAWS. I snuck behind my parents couch after I was suppose to be in bed at age 4 or 5 to watch it and was absolutely horrified! I never went to the beach without being afraid of the water ever again ( TO THIS DAY- I ALWAYS THINK OF THAT GIRL GETTING YANKED UNDER WATER! )I think that movie has had an effect on most everybody.

Not the first scary movie I ever saw, but the only one that ever gave me nightmares... for years, and one I will NEVER watch again, (and I like scary movies): 'Don't Look Now' with Julie Christie and Donalds Sutherland, based on a book by Daphne Du Maurier. I can't even think of the ending without getting the "willies". Oooooh!

the film, "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad" on tv, at about four years old, and the part I remember being a bit scary was when the Cyclops came out of the cave, and the people were only saved when the boy genie [played by Richard Eyer] created the invisible wall of protection.

Those horrid flying monkeys from "The Wizard of Oz" are much scarier than the Wicked Witch of the West, or even "The Exorcist" in my book!

I remember "Misery" with Kathy Bates and James Caan scared the hell out of me as a kid. Especially the scene where he's waking up from a peaceful nap, and then the next thing you see is her standing over him with a huge kitchen knife, with that crazy blank look on her face. For some reason I nearly jumped out of my skin at that scene. It was just so abrupt. That movie to me is very scary, especially since it can actually happen. The movies that are scary in a made up, fantasy-like, nonsense way don't really do much for me. It's the ones that are realistic that are scary.

I also remember "Aliens" scaring me as a kid. Especially the scene where the alien comes out of the guys stomach. I had nightmares after watching that movie as a kid.

Halloween was the first really scary movie I saw. I was about six at the time and I was so petrified to go to sleep afterwards. Luckily I overcame my fears of that movie. The next scary movie that really had an effect on me was The Exorcist. I watched that when I was 12. I had to sleep in my mom and dad's bed for about 3 weeks after that one. I kept thinking the bed was shaking and I wouldn't go to sleep at night without a cross hanging over my bed. It still scares me, but at least now I don't get as dramatic as I did the first time I watched it.
