Boy that Suit and briefcase businessman disguised in causal clothing was really denying it ,When he talked about it , I am curious yellow.He claimed that the controversy was that women having an imaginary conversation with Martin Luther king,The way he discussed it was so politically correct,not to press peoples buttons.The real controversy was ,at the time, the nudity and suggested sex act scene.The fact that when it arrived in New york city ,an import,It was held back from distribution until the new york supreme court judge could see the film and determine if it was obscene or not. It was banned.Eventually it was fought against.This is what had drawn a lot of people to see it and becoming a box office hit.Other than that it was poor.Even in the news, backs in the sixties, many theater goers,who were being interviewed, stated that it was dull. That was the controversy
