I've got to recommend DARK CITY: THE LOST WORLD OF FILM NOIR by Eddie Muller. Covers the genre extremely well with numerous pictures and posters from the era. Check it out!

and that other book by that, was it Silver person, but did not find either of these books worth buying.

 

They both mostly rehash old info, and are not really well that written, plus there were errors and one could do better by just finding all the old articles from Cahiers du Cinema, instead of reading excerpts that the authors have selected to support their views.

 

I'm sure for someone totally new to movies, they might be fine though as an introduction.
