LonesomePolecat
Seems like my favorite characters in the old war movies are the scroungers--where would be have been without them? My favorite scroungers are Tony Curtis in OPERATION PETTICOAT & James Garner in THE GREAT ESCAPE. Anyone else love the scroungers in the old war movies? JamesJazGuitar
Not sure if I understand the type of character you're looking for but here I go: George Segal in King Rat Don Rickles in Kelly's Heros Bill Holden in Stalag
Gorch
Let's not forget James Garner in both "The Great Escape" and "The Americanization of Emily".
nightwalker
Good choices, all. I'd also mention Jim Hutton in The Green Berets.
FredCDobbs
OPERATION PETTICOAT is the greatest of all the army/navy comedy films. It has a great cast and a great script. And it is true that white primer paint and rust colored primer paint, when mixed together, will produce a bright pink color.
sfpcc2
I know this man was on TV but would Radar O'Riley from M*A*S*H be in this category? (However he was in the movie.)
Kid Dabb
Radar counts. I believe he was the only original character to move from the film to the TV series. I was going to say Operation Petticoat myself. The whole set of scenes surrounding the pig were hilarious. They milked that pig.
roverrocks
Louis Wolheim as the German soldier scrounger "Kat" was a great in the 1930 "All Quiet On The Western Front". So sad to see him die in the end.

faceinthecrowd
If memory serves, Radar scrounged some *blood* that the surgeons needed urgently. He got it from an unconscious officer.
Sepiatone
Don't forget, Tony Curtis was able to reprise that "scrounger" type character in CAPTAIN NEWMAN, MD. Sepiatone
LonesomePolecat
Great additions here. And Radar definitely counts, though I always think of Klinger first. Another one I remembered is Luther Billis in SOUTH PACIFIC, played in the film by the great Ray Walston, who charged people to take a shower. Always wheeling and dealing was he.
