MelissaW.
Is it just me or is there a vaguely nightmarish quality to the musical numbers in this film? Maybe it has something to do with the finale. The spindly white wire furnishings against the lurid persimmon background reminded me of nothing so much as this:
Terrence1
This movie is a nightmare? I realize that people have different opinions, but I love this film, especially the musical numbers. It's not often that one gets to see such an array of talent in one movie. But that's just me speaking! Terrence.
MelissaW.
Now, now. I didn't say the movie was a nightmare. But the art direction lends a lurid, nightmarish quality to the musical numbers. Yes, there's a wealth of talent on display but it's the backdrop for that talent that made me feel slightly bilious. Terrence1
Thanks for explaining that further. I really should watch it again. I may have forgotten a lot about it. I hope I didn't come across as being pompous.
MelissaW.
In general, I enjoy the Arthur Freed musicals. So many of them (particularly the '51 Show Boat) display such beautiful, candy box colors. But the color in this one, along with sets and costumes and even down to the makeup, seems off to me. But there are little gems, like Lena Horne, Dinah Shore, and the satin-voiced Tony Martin singing "All the Things You Are" (my favorite song of all time.) DownGoesFrazier
What does Lena Horne sing in this one? Can't do any better than Lena's rendition of "Love" in ZIEGFELD FOLLIES.
MelissaW.
What does Lena Horne sing in this one? Can't do any better than Lena's rendition of "Love" in ZIEGFELD FOLLIES. She sings "Why Was I Born?" and then also sings "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" in costume as Julie Laverne in a sort of mini-production of Show Boat that opens the film. (In that production, Kathryn Grayson does a little mini tryout as Magnolia opposite Tony Martin as Gay.)
JamesJazGuitar
Funny but I was just out to dinner with my manager and her boyfriend. They know that I'm a big 'old' movie and jazz fan. I mentioned that Poter and Kern were some of my favorite songwriters and they mentioned TTCRB. They were surprised I had never seen it and were happy that, for once, they could recommend something to me! Then I see this thread. Did TCM just show this movie? I was out of town and the hotel didn't carry TCM.
Hibi
Yep. I think it was a night of Bob's picks a week or so ago.........
DownGoesFrazier
I don't travel very much these days. What's the deal with hotels and TCM? Do many carry it?
