Another good answer.  I didn't realize that there were so many.  I suppose we should end this now.  I was thinking of Jim Backus, who also was featured in Gilligan's Island and I Married Joan.  I think Miles should go ahead with another question, since he was the first to answer.

Terrence, when you say recurring role, to me that is someone who appears only occasionally in a TV series, like Richard Deacon in "Leave It To Beaver".  Jim Backus appeared in all of the episodes of "Gilligan's Island" and "I Married Joan".  I would call him a regular or co-star in those shows.  I'll give you an example of what I think is a recurring role in my next question.

In the sixties, an actress had a recurring role on a sitcom as a nanny.  Back in the thirties and forties she had been a young, beautiful leading lady in many movies.  As she got older, she worked only sparingly in TV.  She was originally from England.  Who is she and what was the TV series where she portrayed a nanny?  It's not Ida Lupino.

A mainstream national magazine predicted stardom for this actress, but despite over 40 years of steady work, she never achieved it.  She had co-starring roles in films and tv from the 50's to the 90's.  Sit com fans may best remember her from playing the girl friend of a character in a mid 70s show, and the mother of a character of a 90's comedy.  Both of these sitcoms were very popular..in fact, they're still viewed today.  Do you know the actress that never quite lived up to the hype, and the two tv shows mentioned?

Yes, It's Sheree North, touted as the next Marilyn.   The sitcoms I was actually thinking of were The Mary Tyler Moore Show, where she appeared as Lou Grant's lounge-singer girlfriend and of course, as Kramer's mom on Seinfeld (and revealed his first name at last!)...but you got Sheree...Your thread, LawrenceA!

This character actor has been working in TV and films since 1952. He has had long runs on multiple soap operas, as well as roles on various primetime shows. One such was during the first season of a long-running detective show. In the initial season, he was the detective's boss, but the show re-structured before the second season, and the boss role was eliminated. The show went on to run 8 seasons.

Name this actor (who is still alive at age 92), as well as the detective show that he originally co-starred in.

Would that be Lois Maxwell, who played Miss Moneypenny in the James Bond films?  The actor with the TV series would be Roger Moore, who starred as "The Saint" on TV before he took over the Bond role.  Lois Maxwell appeared in a couple of episodes of "The Saint".  Of course, TCM just ran.a marathon of "The Saint" movies just a few days ago.

Lois Maxwell as Miss Moneypenny, played the role 14 times, Roger Moore in The Saint is all correct Miles. Maxwell appeared in a couple of The Saint episodes with Moore and of course with him in some of the Bond films. Good work, your thread Miles  :)

Sometimes a theatrical feature film becomes the basis for a TV series, but rarely do the original movie actors play the same roles in the TV series.  In the 1950's, however, this happened on a few occasions.  Can you think of any

William Bendix as Chester A Riley in the film and tv show The Life of Riley

Marie Wilson was My Friend Irma on the big screen in 1949, and played the same spacy blond in the tv series (52-54).  When Blondie became a tv series, the lead role was different (Penny Singleton in the film series, Pamela Britton on tv), but Arthur Lake continued as Dagwood.

Very good, Lav, and quick too!  I was also thinking of Arthur Lake, who played Dagwood in the "Blondie" movie series, as well as the 1957 TV series.  Also, Ozzie, Harriet, David, and Ricky Nelson starred in "Here Come The Nelsons", which served as a sort of pilot film for the TV series.  There may have been others, but we'll save them for another time.  It's your thread, Lavender.
