Next: This syndicated TV series lasted 2 seasons and 78 episodes. The main character was based on a real-life person involved in the justice system. Many guest-stars went on to fame, including Leonard Nimoy who appears as a young gang member in one episode, and Mary Tyler Moore in another episode, where she is accused of slipping secrets to the Commies!

Name the show, as well as the star.

This beloved stand-up comedian has starred in numerous TV series. Two were huge hits, lasting for several seasons, and are still being shown in rerun syndication to this day. However, neither won the Emmy for Best Comedy series. The show that he starred in that did win lasted only a single season!

Name this comedian, as well as the three series referenced above.

The only one that seems to fit is Art Carney, whose Art Carnet Special won an Emmy for "Best Comedy Series"..........?????????

No, this guy had many shows on TV, often with some variation of his name in the title. The ones that were big hits were in the 70's and 80's, while the one that won the Emmy was in the 60's.

He's still alive, too.

It's got to be Bob Newhart.  The first one, "The Bob Newhart Show" was not a sitcom, but was more of a variety show.  The second, "The Bob Newhart Show" was the sitcom where he played a psychologist.   The third, "Newhart" was the sitcom where he played a Vermont innkeeper.

I didn't realize that the first "Bob Newhart Show" was different from the second "Bob Newhart Show".

That's correct, Miles. And DGF, I didn't know that either, until I happened to be reading about the Emmys the other night.

Your thread, Miles.

There was a 60's comedy series about a poor beach combing family that lived in a community where they were in constant conflict with the upper crust rich folks of the local yacht club.  The family's other sources of income included running chartered fishing tours and selling fish-on-a stick.  Can you name the series and at least one of the stars?

The Baileys of Balboa? Paul Ford?

That's the one, DGF.  Here is a real short clip of the opening credits:

It also featured a pre-Laugh-In Judy Carne as John Dehner's daughter, who is in love with Sam Bailey's son, played by Les Brown Jr, the son of the band leader.  Clint Howard had played a kid with a sandwich and no dialogue on "The Andy Griffith Show".  Here he actually speaks.  Sterling Holloway actually was living on Balboa Island when this series was filmed.  It only lasted one season.  It's your turn now, DGF.

This woman was a featured singer with several well-known bands of the big-band era. She was Jewish and changed her last name to a non-Jewish sounding name starting with the same letter. Her name?

That one was an easy one for me, DGF.  My father had his own dance band when I was a kid, Unfortunately, I inherited no musical ability, but I did grow up listening to lots of Big Band music.

Now, another TV series where poor folks live among the rich aired in the 60's.  This time, the poor family had been wealthy, but they lost their fortune.  They are supported by the state and still try to live as if they were wealthy in their Long Island community.  Can you name the series and the female star?

The female star made a few movies with Bob Hope.

The Pruitts of Southampton-- I don't know how in the world I remember this one because it didn't last a whole season, I think. I probably remembered it because Phyllis Diller was the star and I really liked her stand up. But I never bothered to watch this show. I think it was on ABC.

Phyllis didn't really fit into the situation comedy format very well.

You are correct, Princess.  I agree that Phyllis was better doing stand-up comedy and as a guest on talk shows.  Here is a short clip of the show's opening.

You may have noticed old movie pros Reginald Gardner and Grady Sutton as cast regulars.  The show was kind of a reverse twist on "The Beverly Hillbillies", where now a rich family becomes poor and they have trouble adapting.

Good job, Princess.  It's your turn now.
