Thanks, Frazier.  That was a great question.

This character actress, a veteran of many movies, appeared in the pilot episode of this popular
TV series.  At the end of the episode, she was replaced by someone who would become a regular on that series.  Name the actress and the series.

Hold on there, DGF.  I believe that my answer is a correct one for the question.  It's just not the one that Terrence was thinking of.  By the way, Jim Backus played Joe Randolph in "Here Come The Nelsons", but Lyle Talbot played Joe in the TV series.  Ann Doran and Jim Backus would play a married couple again, as James Dean's parents in "Rebel Without A  Cause".  Ann Doran was in several of James Stewart's films, including "You Can't Take It With You", "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington", "Magic Town", and "The Jackpot".  So you see, everything fits.  OK, Terrence, how about a hint?

I know that. I was construing the term "incorrect" very narrowly. I know that you just don't impulsively post answers like I do.

Mary Treen is correct.  Some people will not recognize her name, but will remember her when they see her.  She had a very distinctive look and voice.  She appeared in the pilot of The Andy Griffith Show.  She was Andy's housekeeper who got married in the pilot episode.   She quit her job, opening it up for Aunt Bea.  It's yours, Miles.

Thanks.  I'm back from the game now.  The UCONN women's basketball team beat Florida State 73-49 at the Mohegan Sun arena, which is about twenty-two miles from my home.  I sat three rows behind the UCONN bench, so if you watched the game on ESPN2, then you saw me quite a few times.

Now, a veteran character actress, who had a long career on the stage, had appeared in a Hitchcock movie before becoming a regular in a fifties TV series about a schoolteacher.  She was not the star of the show, but she did play a befuddled, easily confused teacher.  Later, she had a recurring role in a popular 60's sitcom, again playing someone who was easily befuddled and confused.  Can you name this actress and the two series that she was in?

Is the actress Marion Lorne? She appeared regularly on the Garry Moore Show and as Aunt Clara on "Bewitched" for which she was awarded a posthumous Emmy Award. She appeared on an earlier TV series called "Mr. Peepers" which starred Wally Cox.

Is this the actress and TV Series you are thinking about?

It certainly is Marion Lorne.  She played Robert Walker's mother in "Strangers On A Train".  "Mr. Peepers" made a star of Wally Cox.  Tony Randall was also in that series.  Most people remember Marion Lorne from "Bewitched".  When she died, they didn't re-cast the role, but they brought in Alice Ghostley to play another somewhat scatterbrained witch name Esmeralda.

Marsha, I hope that you're old enough for this thread, because it's your turn now.

Thanks, Miles - I'm definitely old enough but am very tired right now. However, I'm going to give it a try.

This actor who has a magnificent voice was recently featured in the lead in a movie recently aired on TCM. It was a recreation of his stage role. The actor also starred in a very popular TV series.

1. Name the actor, 2. Name the movie and role he recreated. 3. Name the TV Series.

(This is the only thing I could come up with ,but it doesn't quite jive with your criteria. So you'll be the judge of that.)

Howard Keel starred in a number of MGM musicals.

He also starred on Broadway in a number of these musicals, but he was not the original performer who was cast in any of these roles.

Point being he couldn't have recreated these roles in the films because he didn't do these roles originally, chronologically first on stage on Broadway.

But here goes:???

Kismet, kiss me Kate, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and showboat after he had made the movies.

He also had a long run on the CBS-TV show Dallas, as JR's father.

Princess,

You've come up with a good guess, but Howard Keel is not this actor. I think that when I mentioned that this actor has a "magnificent voice" it was misleading.  This actor has a magnificent speaking voice - beautiful timber and once you've heard his voice you remember it because of its beautiful quality.

I hope this explanation will assist everyone in coming up with the name of this extraordinary actor. I'll wait a little longer to see if someone gets the correct answer to this thread. If not, I'll provide you all with another hint.

Marsha, your clues are a little confusing. You wrote the actor did not appear in the movie version of the play he was in that role was given to another actor, then you ask for the movie he recreated the role in. I'm confused. I was thinking of Ben Gazzara and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, he was Brick in the play, obviously Newman, had the role in the film. I know that Ben and John Cassavetes were very close friends (along with Peter Falk). Is it Ben? Ben starred in the tv show Run For Your Life in the 1960's. Burl Ives did the Big Daddy role on Broadway and recreated his role of Big Daddy in Cat his tv show that was popular in the '60's was The Bold Ones and I think Burl and Elia Kazan were friends. Is it possibly Burl or Ben ??????
