In the field of rock, r&b, and oldies (pre-1970), there are at least 3 singers named "Shirley" who made a name for themselves. Shirley you know this. Name them. Shirley Bassey does not count."

DJ - For me this is tough. I can only come up with 2 - Shirley Ellis ("The Name Game", "The Nitty Gritty") and Shirley Owens of "The Shirelles" who became Shirley Alston Reeves ("Will You Love Me Tomorrow", "Tonight's The Night", "Mama Said", "Baby It's You"). So, I can't complete the thread with a third Shirley.

Good. The third one recorded with a male partner and later with a backup group.

Fra-- I love this question about a classic rock song--

Actually I had this record and I'll have to go way back for it--

Shirley and Lee--

But I believe they did Let the Good Times Roll, a real classic.

But I don't know her last name and I'm too lazy to Google it.LOL

Shirley Goodman. She also headed Shirley & Company. Marsha gets the thread.

Thanks, DJ.

I love music, so staying within the "classic rock" category, name three singer-songwriter musicians and composers with first name Neil in the fields of pop-rock, folk-rock, country, country-rock, soft rock and amplified rock who started their careers pre-1970. Feel free to name one song or more recorded by each "Neil". Since each of these "Neils" have had long careers, if you do name songs, they can be pre-1970 or after.

Terrific, DJ.  Thanks for including Neal Schon, who I remember from the Santana III album. This thread is deservedly yours.

I'm not sure if this would qualify as a rock song.  (It's actually R& B).

Sweet Inspiration

(The more I think about it, this would not qualify since the singing group was The Sweet Inspirations .)

Coincidentally, Eugenia just mentioned "Talk Talk" by Talk Talk on another thread. But that was from the '80s. The one I'm thinking of was pre-1980.

In this episode of a Western TV series, the star goes undercover and in the process sings the classic "Whip-Crack-Away" while cracking a whip.  [Regarding songs accompanied by whip, this could be even better than the "Blues Brothers" rendition of the theme from "Rawhide".]

Name the TV series and the star and this undercover character.

Bonus points for another song he sings solo in this episode.

Doris Day sang that song originally in "Calamity Jane" for Warner Bros.  If you have the Encore Western Channel, then you can see episodes of Warner Bros. TV series like Maverick and Cheyenne.  You may also notice that Warner Bros. sometimes rehashed plots from their old movies in some of the TV series scripts.  In this instance, they rehashed an old song.   In an episode of "Cheyenne" called "The Conspirators", Clint Walker plays two parts, Cheyenne Bodie, and a lookalike actor name Jim Thornton Merritt. The government thinks that Merritt is part of a conspiracy to resurrect the Confederacy.  They nab him and substitute Cheyenne in his place to find who the other conspirators are.  Clint Walker sings several songs.  Here is "Whip-Crack-Away", also known as "The Deadwood Stage".

Clint also solos on "Beautiful Dreamer" and he joins Joan Weldon for duets on "Dixie" and "Some Sunday Morning".

You may have recognized veteran actors Tom Conway and Guinn "Big Boy" Williams in those clips.

Miles,

Thanks for including the clip of Clint playing Merritt and singing "Whip-Crack-Away".  That's the show and episode.

He also did a good solo job with "Beautiful Dreamer" in that episode.

Your thread.

Well, to illustrate the point, here is Clint with "Beautiful Dreamer".

Now, one of the stars of another western series was a young actor who sang in a few episodes.  He later went on to have a long career in the music business.  In one episode of the series he sings to a young actress whom he had worked with some years earlier on a different TV show.  Can you name the singer, the western series, and for bonus points, the young lady and the name of the song?  The show was telecast in the early sixties.

I keep thinking about Johnny Crawford. He sang twice in 2 different episodes of the Rifleman. One episode he sang Geensleeves to Karen Sue Trent. I don't think they appeared in another show together though not sure. He also sang to Cheryl Holdridge a song called Something Special. Cheryl and Johnny were both on the Mickey Mouse Club, but again I don't know if it was at the same time ????

You got it, Lavender.  Johnny Crawford and Cheryl Holdridge were former mouseketeers when she appeared with him on "The Rifleman".  Johnny was only a mouseketeer for one season, but Cheryl was one of the original mouseketeers, and they did appear together on the show.  Here they are on "The Rifleman" in a 1962 episode called "A Young Man's Fancy".  The song is "Something Special".

It was about that time that Johnny Crawford started his recording career.

Here is a reunion of former mouseketeers.  Standing are Bobby Burgess and Johnny Crawford.  Seated are Tommy Cole, Cheryl Holdridge, and Doreen Tracy

It's your thread, Lavender.
