Princess of Tap
Whatever happened to my question?. I was looking for Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme as Sinatra's favorite opening act. (I thought you awarded the thread to me? I love Steve & Eydie--they're my personal favorites. But you gave a question and Lawrence answered that question and he opened the thread. And then Miles came on. You were one minute behind Miles. But that was a good question. I saw Steve & Eydie in Kansas City. I always thought she was the better singer but my God, Steve was really good. He sang New York New York. He also was quite an amusing comedian as well. It's still Lawrence's turn--
LawrenceA
Two of the most watched genres on television have been sitcoms and soap operas. Can you name the very first TV sitcom, and the very first soap opera, when they aired, and what network they aired on? bump

Princess of Tap
In the days of classic TV when TV was live the commercials were live too. Cigarettes were the most popular sponsors for classic TV. 1 popular TV singer promoted a very popular brand of cigarettes-- she was what we would call a spokesperson for the cigarettes, but more importantly she sang the commercial. So when you identify the singer and the brand of cigarettes, do you suppose you could give us at least the name of 1 classic TV show who utilized the sponsor too? You don't have to sing the jingle unless you just want to!

Terrence1
I'm thinking of Dorothy Collins on Your Hit Parade. The sponsor was Lucky Strike.
Princess of Tap
I'm thinking of Dorothy Collins on Your Hit Parade. The sponsor was Lucky Strike. Lucky Strike means fine tobacco-- sold American! Terrence-- I must have been her youngest fan. She could sing and she was pretty too. They said rock and roll killed Your Hit Parade. Terrence, well done! Terrence1
Thanks, Princess. The star of this popular sitcom was also a recording artist, and they took advantage of this and incorporated many of the recordings into the plots of the TV series. Name the star and the title of the sitcom.

Terrence1
That's a good answer, Frazier, but not the star that I have in mind. Let's wait a little bit. If no one comes up with the name, it will be yours. OK?
MilesArcher
David Cassidy? "The Partridge Family"? How about Shirley Jones? Ricky Nelson came first. Bing Crosby had a sitcom at one time where he sang occasionally. So did Doris Day, as well as Danny Thomas, and Desi Arnaz.
Terrence1
I'm beginning to think that this was not a very good question. Did Shirley Jones do much recording, other than soundtracks? Ricky Nelson had been on television for years before he started recording. And I don't remember Bing Crosby and Doris Day doing much singing on their shows. And I don't think many would think of Danny Thomas as a recording artist. Desi Arnaz? Just maybe, but that would be quite a stretch. Let's keep trying. Desi Arnaz is not a stretch-- he actually mentioned the recordings on the program. Also he recorded the theme song and sang I Love Lucy. There are words to I Love Lucy. Desi Arnaz would be the answer to your question. Desi Arnaz recorded vocals as well as recording with his own Orchestra. I don't see why that's a stretch. Terrence1
Actually, Princess, I'm going to have to take back my comment about Desi Arnaz being a stretch. He did do some recordings, although his performances on the TV show were done live, rather than lip-synching to a previous recording. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Frazier, your answer was perfectly acceptable, so go ahead with another question and let's continue the game.

MilesArcher
Yes, those are the brothers, whose real last name was Narz. Jack Narz was married to Bill Cullen's wife's sister. He filled in for Bill at times during the early years of "The Price Is Right". Later, younger brother Tom also hosted a version of "The Price Is Right". DGF, it's your turn now. MilesArcher
The first thing that comes to mind is Jackie Gleason and his character, The Poor Soul. That was the basic character he played as a mute janitor in "Gigot", a sort of tribute to Chaplin's "The Kid".
