Retro Trivia

Here's one that you might have to think about.  An actress had a recurring role as the wife of a character in a 1950's TV sitcom.  She played the wife of that same actor in an early 60's TV sitcom.  The two shows were unrelated, except for the fact that they had the same producer.   Do you know her, as well as the actor, and the names of the two shows?

Beatrice Pons was Emma Ritzik on the Plil Silvers Show and Lucille Toody on Car 54 Where Are You? and Joe E Ross played Rupert Ritzik on the Phil Silvers Show and Gunther Toody on Car 54 where are You?  Brilliant writer/producer Nat Hiken produced and created both shows and Allan Melvin played Henshaw on The Phil Silvers Show and Barney on All In the Family ???????????

Thanks. I did watch every week. I'm not just a NY'er but grew up in the Bronx where Car 54 took place. Loved both shows Miles :)

This  60's tv show used a few popular songs especially by one popular group. One of those songs was closely associated with this very popular tv show. The song was a big hit at the time and was on the Billboard Chart. If you watched the tv show, this song will make you think of the show. Many celebrities before they became famous and after appeared on this tv show. Tv Show and the song ??

It must be "The Dating Game"  They used music that was recorded by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.  One song was called "Whipped Cream"  It had a well known record album cover.  Check out this clip:

They also used a song that Alpert recorded call "Spanish Flea".

Similar sounding songs, don't you think?

You got it Miles :) The Dating Game was the show and yes I was thinking of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. Whipped Cream was used to introduce the gal to the 3 guys and Spanish Flea was used to introduce the guys to the gal. Whenever I hear the song Spanish Flea ( huge hit at the time for Herb Alpert) I think of the tv show. Loved Herb. Great work and thank you so much for posting the clips  :)  hope everyone listens to the clips you posted. (great album cover) Your thread Miles

Thanks.  The Dating Game" was created by Chuck Barris, who also created and hosted "The Gong Show", where the winners received a check for $516.32.  Do you know why they received that strange amount?  Also, Chuck Barris is credited with writing a hit song about an amusement park.  Can you name the song and the singer who had the hit record?

I like this record I actually bought the 45.

Palisades Park was a great song and s hit for Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon.

If you really like that song you gotta check out the Beach Boys doing it on

15 Big Ones--Go Beach Boys!

Were there any other hit songs, or even non-hit songs, about an amusement park?

The answer to my first question, "Why $516.32?", is that Check Barris said that his birthday was May, 16, 1932. (5/16/32).  It was later revealed that Chuck, like some other celebrities, took some artistic license with his actual birthday.  He really was born on June 3, 1929.

Princess is correct with "Palisades Park", a 1962 hit for Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon.  I saw him perform at the Eastern States Exposition in Massachusetts a few years ago.  He had a lot of hair and looked much younger than his seventy-odd years at the time.

The song actually lasts less than two minutes, but it was his biggest hit.  Here it is:

Of course, Freddy also had hits with "Tallahassie Lassie":, "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans", and "Where The Action Is".

Now, just for Princess, here is that Beach Boys version of "Palisades Park".

Princess, It's your turn now.

I could see changing the year of his birth, but why the date?

Thank you Miles for indulging Me in My Beach Boys obsession.

Next:This man was a prominent radio and television announcer/ performer during the forties and fifties.

During World War II he was a wartime correspondent.

Never a big star, however the show that he was associated with, for 15

years, was a staple of the golden age of television, which made him and the show household words.
