Thanks.  Now I'll wonder which two you were thinking of.

Now, a TV actor who had a long career seemed to specialize in playing men in uniform.  He was a regular as a soldier in a 1950's sitcom.  He had a recurring role as a soldier in a 60's sitcom, and later in the 60's, he had a recurring role as a marine in yet another sitcom.  He even provided the voice of an army sergeant in an animated TV series.  Can you name him and some of the shows he was on?

Next to Lucy, my favorite TV sitcom. How could Bilko have gotten along without that Corporal Steve Henshaw-- Allan Melvin. I have the anniversary DVD that Allan did the commentary on.

They wanted him to direct but he said he just wanted to go home like the other actors, so next he just had a reoccurring role in Gomer Pyle.

Of course, I saw him after Alice the maid, as the Butcher, in The Brady Bunch.

I don't watch children's cartoons anymore, but I looked it up and apparently he was in Scooby-Doo and Yogi Bear and a lot of stuff.

I almost forgot that that's because I didn't watch it after that --he was propping up what was left of All in the Family after they called it Archie's Place. What a great guy!

You got him, Princess.  On "The Dick Van Dyke Show", Rob would sometimes reminisce about his days in the army and Allan Melvin played his army buddy, Sam Pomerantz.   Allan Melvin also did the voice of Sgt, Snorkle in the animated series "Beetle Bailey", based on the comic strip.

This female singer was popular on 1950's television. She was also a talented violinist, who often challenged fellow violonist, Jack Benny, to a duet.

When you identify her, can you also name one of her signature tunes?

Giselle Mackensie, Hard To Get and Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes ( my dad sang that song alot)

Gisèle was such a beautiful and classy artist. I had a record of her singing It's Delightful to be Married, which was a signature song for another French singer, Anna Held.

BTW-- Lav, Was your dad a good singer?

Long running sit com had a pilot with a different title than the series. 2 of the actors in the series were not the original actors who were in the pilot.1 of the actors who was in the pilot had a growth spurt so another boy was hired who had no real acting experience, ( he showed up at the casting call as a fluke) he appeared in all the episodes of this well known series. The other actor of the series who did not appear in the pilot but did play the role in the series was a known actor. TV show and the boy who did play the role in the series and the other actor who was not in the pilot but was one of the stars of the series ???? ( extra for the title of the pilot)

"Head of the Family"? Carl Reiner starred in the pilot, but Dick Van Dyke replaced him in what would be known as the "DVD Show"?

I was doing some research on Casey Adams aka Max Showalter and I came up with that he was the original Ward Cleaver from Leave it to Beaver. But they weren't calling it Leave it to Beaver then they were calling it it's a small world. Young actor named Paul Sullivan played Wally.

The Beaver, Jerry Mathers was in the pilot.

Fortunately they did a lot of recasting because I don't think Showalter and Sullivan would have pulled it off at all.

Barbara Billingsley and Hugh Beaumont were veterans from movies so they were not beginners. And the very young Beave had an acting resume too because he had worked with Alfred Hitchcock in The Trouble with Harry.

I'm just guessing pre-Olympic swimmer/diver. Tony Dow must have been the amateur, as he was figuring on an Olympic career.

I'm not too sure I answered all your questions, but that's all I know about it.

You did answer all my questions correctly Princess :)

The pilot was titled It's A Small World. Max Showalter played Ward in the pilot. He was replaced by Hugh Beaumont. According to Jerry Mathers it was his mother who had suggested Hugh because Jerry had worked with him before and they got along so well. Paul Sullivan played Wally. Between shooting the pilot and the start of Leave To Beaver, Sullivan had had a growth spurt, so they recast the part. Tony Dow went to the casting call with a friend. Tony was inexperienced as an actor but gave it shot and was cast.

I don't think Showalter would have been the right Ward ( just can't see him in the part) Billingsley and Beaumont looked right together and were convincing as the parents, Beaumont was perfect. Tony Dow of course was the perfect Wally. Perfect casting for this show. Good work Princess, your thread :)

Too bad we don't post photos, we need Miles to post a photo of Max Showalter everyone would recognize him and I think everyone would see how Barbara and Max just didn't look or seem right together. Princess, see my response below. It's your thread

Here is Max Showalter.  He sometimes went by the name Casey Adams.

You may remember him as Jean Peter's husband in "Niagara".

Or from the move "Sixteen Candles" with Molly Ringwald.

He was probably about the worst actor to have a long career.

Princess, it's your thread.

:) Thanks Miles for posting the photos, wanted everyone to know who I was talking about. Now imagine having to watch him as Ward for 6 years on Leave It To Beaver!!!! I doubt the show would have lasted that long with him as Ward. It's too bad he was cast in Niagra. He didn't ruin the film, but he didn't belong there either as Jean Peters husband. As far as Sixteen Candles go, he was perfect as one of the baffoon grandparents! LOL

Miles-- I've got a DVD co-starring Max Showalter in a movie called The Indestructible Man. It's one of those "you can't execute him because he comes back to life movies" and this one is not great but it succeeds because the star, Lon Chaney Jr., was so credible in that genre.

I don't know what physical situation Lon was in at the time because he has virtually no dialogue in this movie, So it's kind of left to Casey Adams or whatever his name is, to be the narrator in this movie and he's really the leading man-- in a very B-movie way.

I think it's the only time I remember seeing him in a movie. He's kind of forgettable and fakey.

My only opinion of him is that he seems much too glib and slick to be a real father and husband type, like the way Hugh Beaumont acted the part.

Max Showalter seemed to be trying for the cheap man's version of Gig Young.

Miles, Many thanks for the visuals.-- I shall return.....

This lady was indeed really a Lady, due to marriage to a well-placed Englishman. But she wanted to be an actress.

In the late fifties, early sixties she openly campaigned in publicity for work. But she didn't get very much, having only appeared in a couple of movies and on a TV series.

However, her husband appeared in a handful of classic films before his death in the early fifties.

His brother had also been an actor in silent movies.

But their son made quite a career as a movie actor in classic films and on a classic TV series.

Today this family is only remembered because of the well-known movie career and celebrity- private life of the son.

When you name the famous son and recall some of his classic films, you might also identify his parents.

Hint: Their son had a contract at a very big Motion Picture Studio and he was considered to be exceedingly handsome, even above Hollywood standards.

Hint#2-- Their son married into one of the most famous families in the United States.

Is the son Peter Lawford? Sydney Lawford his father and Mary Somerville his mother ??

a few of Peter's films were, Good News, It Happened In Brooklyn, Ocean's 11, Dead Ringer and on and on. He also starred in one of my favorite at the time tv shows The Thin Man. Of course we all know about his belonging to the Rat Pack. He was married to Pat Kennedy

I had to answer the phone so didn't finish typing, see below my whole response. The famous American family immediately gave it away, although I thought about Peter this afternoon but was too busy to look him up to verify. But definitely the American family did the trick. Please see my complete answer below. I use to know a little about his past and his strange mother trying to pass Peter off as a girl. I remember reading that many years ago.

I'll post one either later or tomw. Thanks Princess, great question ;)
