Tyrone Power

Yeah, I guess we turned this thread from a Tyrone Power to a William Shatner thread. :)

That movie was awful wasn't it, johnny. One thing that struck me as particularly funny was when Shatner (I forget which one--it was a dual role after all) had killed some thug and the guy (stunt man) was supposed to roll off a rock but you distinctly see him push himself off the rock. It's hilarious. And of course at the end when he faces himself in the final fight, he ties his headband around his head to show how he's returned to his comanche roots (even though he's about the whitest Indian I ever saw.) And poor old Joseph Cotten was in this. Like a said, it was a hoot.

There was no bad blood between Tyrone Power and Cesar Romero. The two were very good friends. Their yachting trips together -- I believe one lasted two weeks -- raised a lot of eyebrows about a possible sexual relationship between them (personally, I'm inclined to believe Cesar was gay and Tyrone bisexual.) Cesar Romero spoke at his friend's funeral.

A few words about bisexuality and homosexuality, lest I begin a war. I believe Hollywood is and was full of closet gays. In today's time actors can be open about it if they wish, or take the it's-none-of-your-business approach if they prefer. But admitting to be gay would have been the kiss of death years ago. Some actors, like Clifton Webb, looked and sounded effeminate to me and I could never believe him as a married man. On the other hand, Tyrone Power was one of the best-looking men on the screen, and he had great chemistry with women. I found him totally believable and love to look at him (I'm watching him and the beautiful Gene Tierney in THE RAZOR'S EDGE right now on Fox Movie Channel.) Ditto Rock Hudson; PILLOW TALK remains one of my favorite movies.

Hi,

I have heard that Madonna was considered to play Lana Turner but so were several others, Sharon Stone for one.

I'd rather see Sharon Stone than Madonna as Madonna has no talent at all only shock value. Sharon Stone has the looks and feel of a movie star, Madonna doesn't.

Also, I wouldn't be averse to Vanna White. She looks the part, but I'm not sure she can act!!!!

I once heard a story in Tangiers years ago that an Italian producer, not familiar with the Lana/Tyrone story, asked Linda Christian if she would play Lana Turner in a TV movie. Linda facetiously said, "Sure!"....

Bad Linda; bratty Linda!!!! But, I did laugh....

vecchiolarry, I'm no Madonna fan but I was fairly bowled over on well she did in Dick Tracy. I read somewhere recently---maybe here---the opinion that Madonna is not good enough to carry a film but that she often did okay in a supporting role. I haven't seen much of her but I thought the character she played---can't remember the name of this famous Tracy personnage---was done quite well including the singing.

If you saw her in this, any comments? Thanks.

I "think" the character Madonna played was "Breathless" - or was that another movie? lol I don't like Madonna at all, but have to admit she did an excellent job with that character.

Nice to hear that so many agree with me about the CRTC - Canada is supposed to be a democracy. :-( I think it's really sad that they can tell us what we can and can't watch.

Hi,

No, I never saw "Dick Tracy". It's not the kind of film I'd be interested in and I never was interested in the comic strip either.

I have seen snippets of the movie and some of the Madonna footage but can't comment on it.

Most of Madonna's looks have been a rehash of old movie stars -- Marilyn, Rita and Clara Bow. If she has any real talent, she should become an original.....

Had to go to Calgary yesterday - was listening to an oldies radio station - CFR - 6.60, I believe. Just curious and you seem to know so much about things. There was not that much Canadian content in old music - they play some but certainly not enough to qualify as 30% - how does CFR get away with playing less than 30% Canadian content thus satisfying the CRTC? Couldn't TCM do the same thing? Just wondering if you knew.

There was a blond actress on NYPD Blue whose name escapes me, but every time I saw her I thought of Lana Turner. She's older now and might not be able to pull off Lana in the early years, but I'd love to see her play Lana from the 50s on.

Hi Bundie and Katy,

I wonder if you're thinking of Gail O'Grady or Sharon Lawrence from NYPD Blue. Either one could probably play Lana and they are both good actresses.

Gail O'Grady was a redhead at one point along the way, but I haven't seen nor heard about her in ages.

Sharon Lawrence played Maisie, the hooker housewife/ dominatrix, on "Desperate Housewives" and was hilarious.

As to the CRTC, one wonders what runs them. My guess is that they sit around making up all these rules just to justify their pay cheques and then don't monitor or enforce any of them until somebody complains.

They're just useless parasites on the public payroll.

Just saw Taryn Power at her dad's annual memorial in November. Linda Christian is living in Palm Springs and Romina is still in Rome. Taryn and her family live in Wisconsin.

Yes, Power's third wife is Deborah Minardos Power as she was married previously to Nico Minardos.
