WARD BOND: He's EVERYWHERE!

Everytime a hard-boiled newspaper reporter jumps on a bus with a runaway heiress, he'll be there...

...Everytime a brawl between cabbies and a banker named Cosmo happens, he'll be there...

...He'll be there when the local street gang beats up on a snobby rich kid, or when a private dick chases after a bird statuette...

...And when a well loved and respected Savings and Loan president contemplates jumping off a bridge, why he'll be THERE, too!

He's EVERYWHERE!

What makes Bond one of the top supporting actors of the studio era was that he could play almost any type of role. He wasn't a character actor; one that has a very similar persona in everyone of their roles. e.g. Frank Pangborn.

While he often played a gruff type of man he could play a softer type of guy like the detective in The Maltese Falcon. Producers and directors knew they could call on him for a role and he could nail it.

While Bond will probably remain best remembered for Wagon Train and as being a member of John Ford's stock company, I think that his greatest role may well have been as a boisterous, hard drinking John L. Sullivan in director's Raoul Walsh's Gentleman Jim.

Bond's final scene in the film is sentimental and heart breaking. Having been defeated for his heavyweight championship belt by the film's title character, Bond as Sullivan unexpectantly shows up at Gentleman Jim Corbett's celebration party.

Bond congratulates the new heavyweight champion on his victory, graciously shaking hands and saying that perhaps this "gentleman" was bringing a new element to the fight game that it had never received from old timers like himself.

Bond plays the scene was great dignity. He has just lost the one thing that meant more to him than anything else in the world (it now belongs to another) but he walks proudly, stone faced away from the party, with all eyes upon him.

Walsh filmed the scene as a passing of the torch, from one generation of bruiser/half wrestler boxer (represented by Bond's John L.) to a more scientific breed of fighter. It was one of Ward Bond's finest moments as an actor.

I LOVE WARD BOND SO MUCH!!!! Seriously one of my favorite actors of all time.

I love him in SARGENT YORK when he attempts persuade Gary Cooper, "Go on and dance with that there big woman!"

Don't forget THE SEARCHERS & every other John Ford film ever made

He also arrests the family in YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU

And, you know, ever other movie ever made :)

Ward Bond was one of the finest supporting actors ever. He was also one of the busiest ever. He appeared in more John Ford films then John Wayne, over a dozen. The last Ford film he was in, "The Wings of Eagles", he played movie director John Dodge {Ford}. That's not counting the TV episodes Ford directed, including the "Wagon Train" when he co starred with John Wayne. In 1935 alone he appeared in 29 films..

I loved the remark he made when Anna Magnani beat out Susan Hayward for the best actress. "They're called the Oscars, not the raviolis". He suffered more at the hands of Ford them any other actor, but was loved by Ford also. Ford once sent him a snapshot of him {Ford} and Wayne on location without Bond. They were standing next to the back side of a horse and the caption read "Thinking of you"...

You're right there, lavenderblue. A thread meant to celebrate Bond as a performer can quickly go in a different direction if the concentration turned to his politics.

Another great Bond performance was in Nicholas Ray's On Dangerous Ground, as a man bent on vigilante justice.

Bond is in one of my favorite scenes in "Gone With the Wind"...

200_s.gif

"Well, alright. If you swear as a gentleman that these two were with you all night at Belle Watling's place!"

-"As a 'GENTLEMAN'? Yes, SURE I will, Tom!"

(...Gable's line-reading never fails to crack me up)

Another of my favorite Ward Bond roles is as Elder Wiggs in Ford's "Wagon Master"

Wagon-Master-1950-5.jpg

Travis Blue (Ben Johnson): (about the Navajo chief) "Near as I can figure out, he don't seem to like white men."

Sandy(Harry Carey Jr.): "Yeah, he say's we're all thieves."

Elder Wiggs: "Smarter then he looks!"

(Sandy begins speaking Navajo, evidently translating what Elder Wiggs had just said)

Elder Wiggs: "Don't tell him that, you fool! Tell him we're Mormons!"

(the Navajo chief speaking in their native tongue begins mutterring "Mormony" repeatedly and something else)

Elder Wiggs: "What'd he say?"

Sandy: "Say's the Mormons are his brothers. Says they ain't big thieves like most white men. Just little thieves."

Elder Wiggs: "Right complimentary, ain't he?"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

(...and yet another bit of movie dialogue that never fails to crack me up, but with Bond having the best lines THIS time!)

I agree with both lavenderblue and you but note I wasn't the one that put that quote into this thread. Maybe I was reading too much into the quote but I really don't see any other way to interpret it.

Anyhow, it doesn't change how I feel about Bond as an actor. I have always taken the position that what an actor does in their private life has no impact to how I judge their ability as an actor.

Once again, as with many film stars, I'd never heard of him before *Wagon Train* but from the way they promoted him as the star I knew he must be somebody special. Thank you TV and all the old movie shows, late or earlier, that verified my suspicions.

Nobody's mentioned *Drums Along the Mohawk* where Edna Mae Oliver and he make an unlikely but charming duo. He's the ultimate Western villain in *Canyon Passage* and his take on "that'll be the day" on *Wagon Train* was more natural sounding than Wayne's in *The Searchers.* He deserves this thread.

Ward Bond would play director John Dodge in John Ford's The Wings of Eagles, a role that was a takeoff on Ford.

Bond also directed a few scenes in Mister Roberts, between the time of Ford's departure from that film and Mervyn LeRoy's arrival.

Me too. For some reason all it takes is an unusual hairsyle & costume to completely change his face for me. Maybe his even featured face (won't say nondescript) is what helps him "become" his charactor so convincingly.

I watched GWTW & IAWL for years before realizing he was in both. (same as with Thomas Mitchell, but he's more recognisable in roles than Bond)

It can be a game to play "spot Ward Bond" especially when in a one line bit part....once he speaks, I recognise him.

When I saw the thread title in the sidebar it said "WARD BOND: he's...." and I knew the last word was "everywhere".
