Red Skelton

Some of Skelton's earliest vaudeville experience was in Toronto, and he was always sentimental about that city.

A friend of mine used to run a Toronto bookstore and one day Red came into it. The comic, world famous at this time, went into a 20 to 30 minute comedy routine with just a one person audience - my friend.

I guess that says a lot about Skelton's personality - a natural entertainer, even when he was doing free in front of a total stranger.

My friend, who reads a lot about show biz, also told me that Skelton's rehearsals for his television show were known for the profanities used by Skelton, all in fun, mind you, that used to break up the crew. Some people would drop by for the rehearsals, I think he told me, just to hear Red in blue-mode. Naturally it was completely cleaned up for the final television product.

As a further illustration of Skelton's personality, I also heard from my friend that on one occasion, to provoke a neighbour, the comic played a giant projector with pornographic imagery on the neighbour's home across the street. The neighbour, whom I gathered was a bit conservative, did not appreciate the comic's sense of humour.

I think that the length of Skelton's film career points to the fact that a lot of movie goers obviously enjoyed his work, as well.

It's been a while since I saw A Southern Yankee but I remember rather enjoying that film, no doubt assisted by the fact that Buster Keaton was a principle gag writer for the film (that bit with Red walking between the two opposing armies, wearing a half Union, half Confederate uniform while carrying the two sided flag almost looks like something that could have been in The General).

Marcel Marceau always thought highly of Red's pantomime work, so there's that. And Keaton helped Red ot for one scene in some movie.

Red and the staff were trying to work ot a way for Red's character to get ot of a room with a big dog blocking the way on the other side. He couldn't go out the window, as the room was on the second floor, and the rose trellis thing had been done too many times. Other options didn't pass muster. Keaton happened by, on his way to something else and Red stopped him to ask for advice...Keaton looked briefly at the set up and suggested the character remove the hinge pins from the door, and spin around with the door as the dog entered. It wound up in the movie, and Red was even more impressed at this "hero's" quick mind and creativity.

Yes, comedy is subjective. My wife can't figure out why I and several of my friends crack up over the Firesign Theater, doesn't care for the Marx Brothers, never "got" the flap over Harold Lloyd. Never cared for Woody Allen, even before the Soon Yi (or whatever) thing, thought Peter Sellars wasn't anything special. In short, she's a COMMUNIST! ;) She also wasn't big on Hope, Benny, Skelton, Abbot and Costello, Kaye or many of the other old timers except Laurel and Hardy. Hell, she even hates CHAPLIN! But she DID like Pryor, Carlin and likes Chris Rock. And is a big fan of Carol Burnett.

So there's THAT. But the only Mel Brooks movies she liked were BLAZING SADDLES and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN. Hated all the others.

Did someone mention Jerry Lewis? For me, who as a kid couldn't wait for his next movie to come out, only THE NUTTY PROFESSOR and THE BELLBOY hold up. And oddly, NONE of the Matin & Lewis movies.

Someone misunderstood me, I think...I DON'T like BRINGING UP BABY.

No one comedian appeals to everybody. To say you don't think a particular comedian is funny is one thing. To dimiss him/her and the people who find them funny as having limited mental abilities or a low level of intelligence more reveals THAT person's low level of intelligence.

This wasn't YOU, Tom. I'm just using the reply to your post as a sounding board.

Thanks for the Keaton-Skelton anecdote, Sepiatone. It's always fun to hear little tales like that.

Keaton used a bit in one of his silents in which what appears to be the rear view of a well costumed lady casually walking away from the camera turns out to be a dress mounted on the rear of a horse (it being discovered when the horse suddenly turns sideways to reveal itself to the camera).

My admittedly sketchy memory tells me that Skelton (obviously with Keaton involved) re-used the same bit in A Southern Yankee.

Given the only comedians you've named that she seems to like are Laurel & Hardy, Pryor, Carlin, Rock, and Burnett, I'd say she's got a good foundation in taste. Does she also like Animal House, The War of the Roses, and Tin Men ? If so, I think you've got a real winner.

Virtually EVERYONE, including the comedians themselves, will admit that different comedians appeal to people of different levels of EDUCATION or SOPHISTICATION. Using the hot-button term of "intelligence" doesn't advance the argument. I never said Skelton's fans were of limited intelligence. I was just recognizing the fact that the people who liked Skelton were not necessarily the same people who liked, say, Mort Sahl..........and I myself think that Skelton is much funnier than Danny Kaye, whose verbal gymnastics leave me stone-faced.

I agree with you and reading your other post I don't see where you were insulting anyone. The Marx brothers are a great example of a team of comics where each of the brothers had a very different type of appeal.

If one loves Harpo over Groucho that doesn't mean they are less intelligent, but the type of humor Harpo offers is less sophisticated than that of Groucho. One has to have a certain level of education to understand many of Groucho wisecracks. Most physical humor doesn't have the same requirement.

>Skelton was found very funny by a certain unsophisticated segment of the population, a segment which tends to be composed of heavy TV viewers.

I would say that's a fair comment. Except for one thing.

Speaking for myself, I can really laugh myself silly at times watching the slapstick comedy of, say, The Three Stooges (as long as it's a Curly). At the same time, however, depending upon my mood, I can also enjoy the verbal witticisms of some of the more "cerebral" comics, such as a Woody Allen or Mort Sahl.

And I suspect that the same would be true for a lot of Skelton (or Three Stooges or whoever) fans, as well. Therefore, I would caution against a large assumption that just because someone enjoys some unsophisticated humour at times, doesn't mean that they necessarily have a steady diet of only that kind of humour.

Which, I suppose, brings up an interesting question about the kind of comics we love. Do most people have varied tastes in the type of humour they enjoy, or do they tend to stick to "cerebral" comics with pungent comentary as opposed to those that are less sophisticated.

There are also, of course, some comics such as the Marx Brothers and W. C. Fields who combine both elements as a part of their appeal.

Well, I THINK I have a real winner, even though she DIDN'T like the movies you mentioned.

James, you don't think calling people "unsophisticated" is insulting? I do. Even when it's true.

The thing to remember is that many people like different kinds of comedy. It all depends on the mood I'm in for me. Sometimes I can lose myself in some old Danny f*cking Kay movie( apologies to Chevy Chase), and other times more "cerebral" kind of comedy. It's how I am with music. I like the TV show MODERN FAMILY because of how most of the funny stuff goes by so fast you might miss it if only paying cursory attention. AND the absence of a "laugh track". Other folks I know don't. OK by me. My sister in law used to roll on the floor when watching WILL AND GRACE. I never even cracked a smile. Yet, it was a HUGE hit. Does THAT make ME, or HER "unsophisticated"?

I think I must test *WAAAYY* down on the good old Stanford-Binet, because unless he's playing the piano, I've always found Chico to be by far the funniest of the Marx Brothers. The other two are funny in spurts, but after a while they just get annoying in their persistence.

Of course it's true that you need at least two of them together to make the humor come off. Without Groucho as the perfect foil, even Chico's classic "Getcher Tutsi-Fruitsi ice cream" skit in A Day at the Races would've fallen flat.

I love Harold Lloyd, *Harlow,* *Powell/Loy,* Donald Duck, the Little Rascals, Hepburn/Grant (but not Hepburn/Tracy), *Fernandel,* Belushi, Laurel & Hardy, Fields, Cheech and Chong, Danny DeVito, Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, Moms Mabley, Eddie Murphy, Chico Marx, Larry David, The Simpsons sans celebrity guests, unintentional self-parodies like Reefer Madness My Dinner With Andre and Massacre Mafia Style, and the occasional comic ventures of Stanwyck and Roz Russell. Is that too sophisticated or not sophisticated enough? Probably it's mostly schizo in the misused sense of the word. :)

OTOH I run away screaming from Hope, Skelton, Jacques Tati, and nearly all comedy that's dependent on jokes or slapstick with little or no strong sense of characters.

And some comics like Mel Brooks blow so hot and cold I can't figure out whether I love em or I hate em.

While Chico's film persona is that of the not so bright foil to Groucho, Chico?s characters are not dummies. In fact often his character is the smartest one in the movie. His jokes cover the spectrum from silly to sophisticated. To me Chico is the glue that makes the team work.

Glad to see that at least one person doesn't think my ChicoLove is misplaced. Thanks for showing your intelligence by agreeing with me. ;)

Groucho: Now we come to where we talk about the taxes.

Chico: I gotta cousin who lives there..

Groucho: Where?

Chico: He lives inna Texas.

Groucho: No! No! I'm talking about TAXES. You know, DOLLARS.

Chico: Dats-a right! He lives inna Dallas Texas!

Finance said: Nobody has questioned whether he was a good person. The question is how funny he was.

Actually, a lot of people have in the past, just not here. He was complex and moody and apparently didn't like writers very much. Nor they him.

I actually like both Skelton and Danny Kaye. I also like Woody Allen, and The Marxes and would say that despite my liking Skelton and Kaye my tastes actually run more toward verbal humor.

In my case, I'll never get Bob Hope's popularity after about 1950.

But I'm more that willing to admit that's just my taste.

>Your punishment for that post is to write ten times on the blackboard, "The pellet with the poison is in the vessel with the pestle". I hope that's as agonizing for you as it was for me listening to it and stuff like it.

LOL

Well, I suppose my "punishment" COULD have been even MORE draconian here, finance.

Yep, you COULD have insisted I write ten times on that blackboard this OTHER famous Danny Kaye routine HERE:

(...and aah, I seriously doubt Mr. Skelton could've done THIS routine justice, btw...nope, I dare say Red would've probably stumbled over the FIRST of these Russian composers names...THAT'S the kind of talent Danny had...though I have a feelin' this'll STILL leave you "stone faced", huh!) ;) LOL
