au hasard, balthazar

Recommended Posts

I love watching TCM foreign imports and especially the work of Robert Bresson this month. While I thought Balthazar was brilliant I am disturbed about how this donkey was really treated. I spent several hours on line trying to find an answer with little success. Did this poor donkey really have his tail set on fire? I am also wondering how he managed to die so realistically. I hate to think the worst. I would appreciate any info on the subject

Not sure, but I know foreign films didn't have the same animal rights as Hollywood did. And certainly not like animal rights today for movies. I've seen some pretty terrible things done to animals in foreign films.

I doubt the donkey was shot to death for the movie, though .
