"Juanita Moore, who broke barriers for African-American actors and was Oscar-nominated for 1959's Imitation of Life, died Wednesday at her home in Los Angeles. Her grandson, actor Kirk Kahn, said she was 99."

The L.A. Times review of her life and career was kind of negative with much based on her own comments.

 

e.g. that after Imitation of Life producers felt she was too expensive to play maids and servants but that roles other than those were not available. Therefore her career tanked.
