Ethel Whitehead(Joan Crawford)leaves her husband(Richard Egan)to take off for the big

city for a better way of life.

Ethel meets Walter Talbot(Eddie Marr)who owns a model agency and she gets a job.One of Ethels duties is to steer customers to a Gambling Csino owned by Grady(Hugh Sanders)Ethel meets Martin Blackford(Kent Smith)an honsest accountant at the model agency.Ethel and Martin go to Gradys one night where Martin meets Grady and he soon takes a liking to Martin and hires him to take care of the books.

After George Castleman(David Brian)a crime czar hears of Martins work at the casino he promotes him to accountant of the whole syndicate.Martin wants nothing to do with anything dishonest,but Ethel talks him into taking the job.

Grady is sent out west to investigate Nick Prenta(Steve Cochran)another hoodlum controlling that part of the country.

Grady is murdered by Prenta,but Castleman decides to send Ethel out to take over for Grady and win Prentas confidence.

Nick Prenta is based on Bugsy Siegal.

Kent Smith is a standout as honest,but easily led bookkeeper.A good character study of the evil and good in people.
