When a head man in the party Gerhart Eisler(Konstantin Shayne)arrives in Pittsburg he promotes Matt to an important job in the party.Matts brother Joe(Paul Picerni)and son Dick(Ron Hagerthy)are ashamed of Matt and all he stands for. Matt is really working with the FBI keeping them informed on red activities. The only ones besides FBI contacts Mason(Philip Carey)and Ken Crowley(Richard Webb)that knows the truth is Matts priest(Roy Roberts).Jim Blandon(James Millacan)head of the local cell sends another red Eve Merrick(Dorothy Hart)to keep an eye on him. Matt wrote a letter to his family,in custody of the priest, telling them the truth. After the death of his mother Matt has a brutal fight with Joe at the funeral and in the scuffle the letter falls into Eves hands.
