Which Actors SCARE You The Most?

And I mean really scare you. Those character actors (or leading men, if there are any) that seem meaner, nastier than a doberman with a bad tooth.

We're talking about the kind of actors that make you think that what you see on screen may be an extension of what the man might be like off screen, as well. (Not that it necessarily is, of course, but their intimidating screen presence is such that it at least makes you wonder).

And, just to show that there's no double standard here, if you can think of any actress that falls into this same category, please chip in with a name.

Here's one for me . . .

Leo Gordon.

With that husky voice and hulking frame, this man could be sheer intimidation. John Wayne may have punched him out in a comedy mud fight in McLintock but I bet the Duke sure wouldn't have gone near a mean minded Leo in a bar if they had both been a couple of Hollywood nobodies.

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSd_9tpe8v6wvFD0qqtN7U

And here's a shot of Leo when he's not in one of his best moods. Now are you going to tell me that anyone has the nerve to talk back to a face like that (excluding members of a masochist club, of course)?

So how about anyone else? Any bad boys (or girls) on screen that you suspect most cast members of a film set may have been a little bit nervous to make them angry?

That's easy: *Robert Ryan* in Crossfire, Act of Violence, Caught, The Racket, Clash By Night, Beware, My Lovely, House of Bamboo, The Naked Spur, Lonelyhearts, and Odds Against Tomorrow. And that's only a partial list.

In real life Ryan was one of Hollywood's leading liberals, and was often quoted as saying that he'd devoted his his entire life to fighting the sort of characters he portrayed in his films. He resisted films that would have cast him in romantic leads to go along with his rugged good looks, because he said that such roles weren't interesting enough.

I vote for this guy, Noah Young Jr.:

23mr19i.jpg

He was in some Laurel and Hardy comedies, but that hulking presence and not-so-handsome face make him look scary to me. He used to be a weightlifter. I don't know if he was nasty off the set, but he seems to be the kind of guy that people would just naturally "step around". :)

Honorable mention: as for modern actors, I'm not a huge fan of Jim Carrey. To be honest, he gives me the creeps. There's something about him that scares me. I don't know his full filmography, but I can totally see him playing a serial killer. He would really fit the role. But, just one girl's opinion...

Bruce Dern. Early in his career he played a number of deranged psychos and was just a little too convincing.

I always imagine some young man arriving at the Dern household on a first date with daughter Laura and having her dad answer the door. Laura probably missed a couple of proms.

Interesting what you said about Bruce Dern. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to meet him in person. I found him to be a very nice man, much unlike those portrayals of his. Among other things, we talked about his appearances on The Big Valley. He loved working with Stanwyck, even though in one scene she slapped hm very hard across the face. And, according to him, that was a real slap.

Actually, Andy, I would never have considered Robert Ryan as scary due to the very reasons you state. Great as he was on screen, I never thought his villainy portrayals were a reflection of the real man. All the more reason to appreciate his skill as an actor, of course, but less reason to think that the man himself might be similarly intimidating.

True, Tom. Also, while Robert Ryan is known for the intimidating men he played, there was always something about him, even in his most vicious roles, that prevented me from hating or fearing his character. I think it was a kind of vulnerability he expressed through his eyes.

This of course only makes his characters more complex, and shows Ryan to be the truly great actor he was.

"That said", I always thought Dennis Hopper was kind of scary. Especially as the twisted sadist in *Blue Velvet*. The fact that his character loved great old 50s tunes only made him creepier. (Kind of similar to Malcolm McDowell's character Alex in *A Clockwork Orange*; Alex is terrifyingly violent, but he falls to pieces with emotion when he hears classical music. In fact, the two things are somehow connected in Alex's sick mind.)

Funny thing though: You think Dennis Hopper is the ultimate terrifying maniac in *Blue Velvet*. Until Dean Stockwell comes along...

Beautifully expressed, MissW, and why some Ryan performances have deeply touched me. A lovely illustration, I feel, of one of his greatest performances was in On Dangerous Ground. He's quite frightening in the film's earlier scenes in his obsessive bent as a pathological cop ready to resort to any means in his pursuit of "the bad guys".

He may well be on the verge of a breakdown, yet there is a wounded animal look in his eyes, a vulnerability in this portrait of a lonely man ready to perform acts of brutality in back alleys. When Ryan later meets a blind woman (the luminous Ida Lupino), which brings him in touch with a sensitivity he had suppressed for years or had buried by years of dealing with the dregs of society, the actor is completely convincing in the gradual transformation that occurs with his character. Ryan rediscovers his own humanity in a performance of wonderful shadings.

A great actor, but not for a moment do I feel that the man himself was the same kind of creature that he sometimes portrayed on screen. Still, Ryan obviously understood those lonely, bitter, confused, racist, at times sick, individuals that he portrayed so well.

I know very little about the real Robert Ryan outside of his political liberalism. Still, even watching Ryan at his most frightening on screen, while I appreciated his craft as an actor, I just never thought it was a reflection of the real man.

Sorry, just getting up and having my first cup of green tea. Based on your reply I guess the post is about actors in real live that scare me.

Well the only one I can think of is Paul Kelly, since he did actually murder a man.

As for Ryan, yea, like you I had read about how he really was; A first class gentleman.

Actually, james, I never thought Dan Duryea was scary. I love the guy, but for me, he's more entertaining than scary. He makes me laugh, and the nastier he is, the funnier I find him to be.

He's like a cartoon bad guy. This is not an insult to his acting; I think Mr. Duryea was a fine actor, and capable of a greater range than he was usually given.

But his slightly goofy-looking face (rather handsome and goofy, at the same time), and his drawling, one-liners way of speaking, excludes him from the category of those ultra frightening actors I figure Tom is talking about here.

I see the point your making about Dan, but I always viewed that smirk as a sign of borderline mental illness and to me that is scary. e.g. even if he gets what he wants from you he might still hurt you.

As for Jack Palance; I just don't find him natural. How he does scary looks forced to me.

I love Palance, of course, in Shane. It's the way he almost whispered his lines combined with his menacing features that made you think that something could explode any minute. He was like a cobra waiting for the command to strike.

I've always had a gut instinct, though, that the man himself might have been a good guy. I could be wrong, though, since I know nothing about him.

Hmm, interesting how we all have such different takes on this subject.

I have to agree with lavender: Jack Palance just has a scary-looking face. Doesn't appear forced to me.

I do know, however, what you mean about evil violent guys who smile. The smiling bad guy is usually much more frightening than his straight-faced counterpart.

But somehow with Dan, I'm just never very worried that he's going to torture anyone, the way I am with Jack Palance or Dennis Hopper.

Barry Fitzgerald is the actor who makes me want to run screaming out of the room. I always check my wallet when he's on screen and would not leave loved ones alone with him.

As for the more usual run of bad guys: Timothy Carey. It's easy to believe the guy could be as unhinged as some of the characters he plays so well.

And I have to agree with the choice of Lawrence Tierney. He really seems like the character he plays in *Born To Kill*.
