Did the Tyson/Holyfield fight happen in 1957? See captions-12 Angry Men

Recommended Posts

At 7:11 PM ET this evening, while watching 12 Angry Men, I noticed the captions of Jack Warden's dialogue referred to the "Tyson/Holyfield" fight. I don't think these boxers were born yet.

Unfortunately, I didn't catch what Warden was saying, my dog distracted me. I feel pretty certain he didn't say Tyson/Holyfield.

If that was that case, boy were those captions ever off.

The fight that Jack Warden's character referenced in 12 Angry Men was the Dempsey-Firpo fight, a heavyweight bout from 1922. It was a two round contest, blissfully free of ear biting.

I rather suspect that fans of heavyweight boxing history will tune into Warden's one reference to the Dempsey-Firpo match in the film in a manner than non-boxing fans will not.

My ears went straight in the air like a bunny's when I heard him refer to that particular match, hailed as one of the highlight contests in Jack Dempsey's career.
