RMeingast
Noticed that TVOntario has begun airing documentaries about movie stars recently. On Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. TVO aired "Rock Hudson: Dark and Handsome Stranger": http://ww3.tvo.org/video/199805/rock-hudson-dark-and-handsome-stranger-preview This upcoming Saturday night (Feb. 15, 2014) at 9:00 p.m. TVO will air "What A Difference A Day Made - Doris Day Superstar": http://ww3.tvo.org/video/199788/what-difference-day-made-doris-day-superstar-preview As an aside, TCM message board thread about the Doris Day documentary is here: http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8273229 Anyway, on Saturday nights TVO used to air the program "Saturday Night at the Movies." That program met its demise last year, with the final episode airing on August 31, 2013: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturday_Night_at_the_Movies So, I don't know if the TVO airings of the movie star documentaries are just a coincidence, or due to the upcoming Academy Awards, or if TPTB are having second thoughts about cancelling "Saturday Night at the Movies"??? Just FYI to people living in Ontario who can watch TVO. You can catch the Doris Day doc. this Saturday night.
misswonderly3
Hey, RM, how're you doing? Yes, I saw that Rock Hudson bio when it was aired on TVO. It was pretty interesting;I thought of it when I watched Rock in *Lover Come Back* today. I also wonder if TVO is airing these docs about classic stars to "make up" for cancelling Saturday Night at the Movies. I'm thinking many TCM fans would like to watch these, if they could (but I doubt many Americans get TVO...) I still wish they hadn't cancelled "Saturday Night at the Movies". sfpcc2
I think I almost broke a TV trying to get that station. This was in the pre cable world of channel 2, 4, 7,9,20,50,56,and 62, (more than 30 years ago.) I kind of miss the simplicity of it.
RMeingast
Very good film about Doris Day last night. Done in a fun way. http://ww3.tvo.org/video/199818/what-difference-day-made-doris-day-superstar (Link above includes a video preview.) TVO schedule for March isn't up yet, so don't know if more actor documentaries are coming? Have to wait and see...
RMeingast
Maybe in border cities in the US, you can find TVO on cable TV?? I have no idea?? TVO ended analog transmission over the past few years (converted to digital): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TVOntario#Digital_television_and_high_definition You may be able to get TVO free through a digital box in Detroit, Buffalo, etc... I don't know... TV viewers in Ontario are able to receive PBS stations as part of a cable package. WNED, for example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WNED-TV (The article above states WNED gets more than half its financial support from donors in Canada - meaning Ontario!) Anyway, I used to get TVO for free through rabbit ears on my TV set. But now I subscribe to cable TV, so no idea how that works anymore if you don't subscribe to cable?? I understand if you have a digital box attached to your TV, you can still get some free TV stations without subscribing to cable?
RMeingast
TVO has the entire documentary available to view on its website: http://ww3.tvo.org/video/199818/what-difference-day-made-doris-day-superstar All 90 minutes and 7 seconds, not just a preview. So you too can watch the whole thing...
sfpcc2
I've had Comcast Cable for more than ten years. The only Canadian station I get is the CBC station out of Windsor. At this point I don't really know the over the air situation at all. When I was in Maine I saw some French language station in my motel in Bangor, but I don't think that's was TVO. I watched 5 minutes of Grey's Anatomy in French. On an unrelated note I really want to get back to Maine, (but my car has 259,400 miles on it.) RMeingast
Sorry about that. I heard that viewers outside Canada get a message stating they can't view the video. TVO only has the rights for Canada, apparently. I wasn't aware as I live in Canada and had no problem viewing the video. Oh well...
RMeingast
TVO airing a documentary on Mary Pickford next Saturday night (repeat early Sunday morning), March 8, 2014: http://ww3.tvo.org/video/200776/mary-pickford-preview Trouble is, I don't know what documentary? TVO is showing the preview for the "American Experience" Mary Pickford documentary directed by Sue Williams: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/pickford/index.html But a TV guide is showing it'll be the documentary "Mary Pickford: The Muse of the Movies" directed by Nicholas Eliopoulos: http://www.marypickfordthemuse.com/flash.htm Anyway, for people in Ontario and any Americans in border cities who can catch the station, it'll be one or the other... RMeingast
TVO aired the American Experience "Mary Pickford" last night: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/pickford/index.html Very good documentary... Funny as this week's TV guide from yesterday's "Toronto Star" stated it would be "Mary Pickford: The Muse of the Movies": http://www.marypickfordthemuse.com/flash.htm So kept me in suspense until the actual thing started on TVO...
