Billy Rose's JUMBO

Ray Faiola

What a shame this stage original wasn't filmed in the 30's (opened on Broadway in November of 1935) and given a more realistic representation of an early-century circus. I find this 1962 production overblown and plastic.

Look at George Stevens' ANNIE OAKLEY or James Whale's SHOW BOAT and for a more naturalistic approach to period theater.

And I would love to read the Hecht-MacArthur original script and compare it to Sidney Sheldon's screenplay.
