The Underrated 2000s

Recommended Posts

2003

Old School

A Mighty Wind

X2: X-Men Unlimited

Finding Nemo

The Italian Job

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Seabiscuit

Under the Tuscan Sun (I don't even typically care for "chick-flick" type films; but I liked this one)

School of Rock

Elf

Love Actually

Re: the animated films vs live action... I personally am listing the films that I liked from each year. I don't care whether the film was animated or not. I personally watch a lot of the animated films and I don't think the lack of live action automatically makes the films less worthy of acclaim. There are just as many fantastic animated films as there are live action. There are also plenty of terrible animated films just as there are awful live action films.

My top 10 of the decade. I haven't seen enough movies since 1999 to compile a separate list for each year, but these ten are so damned great it's almost impossible for me to rank them. IMO every one of them is worth many repeated viewings.

1. Mystic River (2003)

2. There Will Be Blood (2007)

3. The Wrestler (2008)

4. City of God (2002)

5. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005)

6. Letters From Iwo Jima (2006)

7. The Gangs of New York (2002)

8. The Human Stain (2003)

9. The Lives of Others (2006)

10. The Departed (2006)

2003:

1. The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King

2. Oldboy

3. Finding Nemo

4. Mystic River

5. In America

6. Los Angeles Plays Itself

7. Looney Tunes: Back in Action

8. American Splendor

9. Crimson Gold

10. West of the Tracks

I'd have to think what other English language movies would come next, since my runner ups include two from Korea, two from Taiwan, one from Russia and one from Italy. But I supposed Dogville and Lost in Translation would have to be somewhere. I must say I've never seen The Company which does seem worth watching.

I debated putting ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND on my list as an honorable mention for my 2004 selections. But I ultimately decided against it, because I feel it is just too gimmicky and the special effects pull me out of the story too much. I think it's a case where the screenplay was very good, but the execution is not up to par.

Eternal Sunshine was one of the rare films that I initially wasn't bowled over by, but improved significantly on subsequent viewings -enough to make my top ten.

I think Jim Carrey is trying too hard. I would have preferred different casting.

Yuck! A worse list I cannot fathom.

THE HOURS is right up there with BLOW UP or I LOVE YOU ALICE B TOKLAS as one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Nicole Kidman with a unibrow smoking home rolled cigs and mumbling, and Meryl Streep running around as the cosmopolitan dyke (delivering flower arrangements to an AIDS stricken artist, really!), and Julianne Moore as the boring stereotype that the feminazis were yapping about when I was growing up.....Ugh.

Gangs of New York was an overblown farce. Cameron Diaz, say no more.

The rest of them I have probably seen, I can't keep ranting.

The 2000's sucked. Politically, theatrically, and it just sucked.
