edgedrv
Perennial XMAS favorite SCROOGE, starring Alastair Sim, will be released on DVD by BBC Video on 9/27. The 1951 film has been restored and remastered to its original black-and-white glory. This definitive deluxe special edition features an exciting array of bonus features, including the rare 1914 and 1922 silent film versions "A Christmas Carol" and "Scrooge," as well as two complete radio plays from Christmas Day 1950 and 1965. Retail is $19.98. Prior releases of this film on DVD have not be of the upmost quality so I am looking forward to this release.
richardny4me
It is about time! I have never seen this film because I was always waiting for a decent version to be released. Without a doubt this September is going to be one major DVD month.
therealfuster
Finally!!! This is mean to say, as usually I like Reginald Owen, but his Ebenezer in the earlier Hollywood version of this tale, cannot hold a candle to Alastair's, in the classic one from 1951. What an amazing cast...my favorite, Ernest Thesiger, with Miles Malleson, Michael Hordern, Kathleen Harrison AND Hermione Baddeley! I can't tell you how many times, I've seen a tv listing for "A Chistmas Carol" [1951] in the TV Guide, I get ready to watch it, and on comes the version with Owen, the Lockharts and Terry Kilburn. I just want then to pull my hair out. They're fine usually, but when one is ready to see the British film, it is so irksome. This is of course due to the title confusion, and it should just be called "Scrooge" as you rightfully call it. I have taped it off tv to watch every year, and did not buy the colorized dvd I saw once, as that was an abomination. Thanks for the info and I'm so glad it has been remastered! brackenhe
I even sat through this on AMC last Christmas because I'd read so much about it on here that I just had to check it out, even with commercials. And Sim was great in the role.
katyscar11ett
I agree that Sim was the best ever in Scrooge - when he stands on his head always makes me roar with laughter. :-)
nsallieharding
Alaster Sim was also great in "The Ruling Class (1972) 154 Minutes. Cast: Peter O'Toole, Alastair Sim, Arthur Lowe. Directed by Peter Medak. This movie was meant to be released through United Artist, but they wanted to cut it down to 2 hours so the directer bought them out and released it through AVEC. O'Tool is the heir to the title of 14th earl of Gurney but his relatives are a bit concerned about his behavior. Seems that he believes that he is Jesus Christ! So in order to protect the family name, they plan on arranging for him to sire an heir, then lock him up in a sanitarium. You can rent this movie from Nexflex or Blockbuster online. It is a great movie.
leobertucelli
Ah but Albert Finney was fine as Scrooge in 1970i or so And the muscical score by Newely & Bricusse wasn't bad aat all.
bhryun
Bad news folks-the DVD is cancelled. This from a query sent to the BBC Shop: "Thank you for your interest in the Shop. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstance "Scrooge" will not be released. We apologize for the inconvenience." No word on what the hold up might be.
