alix1929
I recently taped COMPLICATED WOMEN, and in it, there is a film clip of a silent film with Norma Shearer. In it, Norma is wearing a spangly gown, and decends down a big staircase (on a stage perhaps?) holding a huge, white fan. Shearer looks nervous, as she climbs down the stairs. Does anyone know the name of this film? Often in shows like COMPLICATED WOMEN teasers of movies not available (like STORY OF TEMPLE DRAKE) are thrown in. Perhaps this is one of them. And if you know the title, has it been shown on TCM? I'm sure since Shearer's in it, it has to be an MGM picture.
feaito
Alix, I've got the book "The Films of Norma Shearer", I'll check it when I get a home and post an answer at night. OK? I remembered some dress of the sort in "Let Us Be Gay" or "Strangers May Kiss", maybe, but those are not silents. We'll see.
alix1929
I have both films, LET US BE GAY and STRANGERS MAY KISS and this dress/film clip is not from either movie. She looks young, that was why I thought it might be a silent.
feaito
Couldn't log in last night...no way...I checked my Shearer book and did not see anything exactly like that...Saw something of the sort she wore in the 1926 film "Upstage". I will have to check The Complicated Women Documentary. I have it taped somewhere.
alix1929
I got curious and check the internet movie data base (imdb.com) for UPSTAGE, and there's not a lot of info there--no synopsis--but it shows five people have seen it, and rated it 5.1 out of 10. That would put her age at about 23, which looks about right to me, based on the film clip. Please continue to check! I also searched the TCM library, and they do have this in their vaults. How about having an up & coming composer put some music to it, and let's see it! It looks intriguing.
feaito
OK Alix; currently I'm at my parents' beach House and I'll be returning to the city on Monday night (tomorrow is a national Holiday here), so I'll re-check it then. It would be great to see Norma's lesser known silents like "The Latest from Paris", "Tower of Lies", "The Actress", "A Lady of Chance" et al. feaito
I'm able to confirm it now; the excerpt is from "Upstage", a 1926 MGM picture, featuring Norma as a vaudeville/chorus girl opposite Oscar Shaw, who starred in the first film of the Marx Brothers, "The Cocoanuts"(1929), opposite Mary Eaton.
