sfpcc2
Has there ever been a movie about the noted World War 1 spy Mata Hari? (I'm sure their has been but I can't seem to think of one.) I've been doing a lot of crossword puzzles lately and her name always seems to come up, (like Asta, Nick and Nora Charles' Dog.)
Terrence1
Although I've never seen it, I understand that Yvonne DeCarlo made a movie about Mata Hari, probably in the 1960's. This was the era when many established Hollywood stars went to Italy to make movies. Actually, a lot of stars went to that couuntry to work. Truth be told, most of the movies were not that good. But Italy did attract stars like Kirk Douglas, Jeanne, Crain, Rhonda Fleming, and Rory Calhoun.
lzcutter
Greta Garbo starred in *Mata Hari* in 1931. It opened to good reviews. As it was a precode film, when it was reissued in 1939, cuts were made to the film. The reissue version is the one that has survived. An archive in Belgium has the uncut version but as of yet, TCM has been unable to broadcast it.
RMeingast
There are two early German silent films about her: "Die Spionin" (1921): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0255613/ "Mata Hari, die rote T?nzerin" (1927): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mata_Hari_%281927_film%29 The 1931 Garbo flick: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mata_Hari_%281931_film%29 Then a 1964 flick "Mata Hari, agent H 21": http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mata_Hari,_agent_H_21 Another German film from 1966 "Der Fall Mata Hari": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0336413/ and a 1985 movie "Mata Hari": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mata_Hari_%281985_film%29 Plus a Dutch TV mini-series about her and a few other films... RMeingast
By coincidence, a review (dated today - March 20, 2014) by British historian Alex von Tunzelmann of Garbo's 1931 "Mata Hari" is here: http://www.theguardian.com/film/2014/mar/20/reel-history-mata-hari-greta-garbo

DownGoesFrazier
I think Douglas's prime motivation in going to Italy was to pursue Pier Angeli. Making movies was secondary.
sfpcc2
I Remember an episode of Fantasy Island where a woman wanted to be Mata Hari. I'm not sure how they dealt with the end.
lavenderblue19
As long as your're going to mention a tv show, then I guess I can mention that in the spoof film *Casino Royale* Joanna Pettitt plays the daughter of Mata Hari.
