TCM Canada Schedule

Not sure what to title this thread but wanted to have someplace to update people on TCM schedule changes for Canadians.

A place to notify people who may not be aware of film substitutions for Canadians because the originally scheduled TCM movie is blacked out in Canada due to rights issues.

 

For example, tonight, April 4 at 8:00 p.m. "Ruby Gentry" is not available for TCM Canadians.

Instead, we get "Behave Yourself!" from 1951:

Saturday, April 5, at 6:45 a.m., TCM Canucks get Hitchcock's "Bon Voyage" instead of "Screen Director's Playhouse."

 

Sunday, April 6, at 2:00 p.m. we don't get "Charly," but "Night Must Fall" instead.

Then, at 12 midnight, we get "The Prisoner of Zenda":

instead of "Old San Francisco."

Before "Twenty Four Eyes" at 2:00 a.m., we get a Mary Pickford short instead of "Angora Love."

Monday, April 7, at 11:30 a.m. we get "The Las Vegas Story" instead of "Forbidden Games."

 

TCM Canucks can see changes by checking out the TCM website:

and/or the "Now Playing" guide denotes films unavailable for Canadians - but not what is replacing the blacked out films.

 

I subscribe to "Now Playing" so will try and do the entire month when I have a chance...

It's so frustrating.

 

A movie I haven't see since the mid 70's is scheduled for Faye Dunaway day in August - it's the first title I went looking for when I heard she was getting a day this year and I was overjoyed to see it listed!

 

That was short-lived. I was crushed upon checking the Canadian schedule to find it's blacked-out up here.

 

I'm really supposed to believe that the obscure, long-forgotten 'Oklahoma Crude' (1973) has rights being withheld by some mysterious Canadian? Come on TCM - TRY A LITTLE HARDER!

July 1 - Happy Canada Day!

As an aside, Canucks need to remember there are many TV stations and TV networks that air old movies in Canada. Sometimes TCM can’t get the rights for Canada because some entity here already has them. And don’t forget Quebec and French-speaking Canadians.
French filmmakers are popular in Quebec and TV entities in Quebec may have rights for films by French directors, etc.
TFO in Ontario airs many classic films – mostly foreign – with either French subtitles or dubbing (non-French film) or just the French original.

For me, the only one in July that p!sses me off is the loss of 'Evil Under the Sun'.

Why does the TCM Canada schedule differ than the TCM US one?  Does it have to do with the rights to air specific films? Or is TCM Canada a separate entity from TCM US and the only thing they have in common is the name? Or do the TCM programmers work to create a schedule they think American audiences would enjoy and another one for Canadian audiences?

 

Just curious.

I can't say I'm thrilled Canadians don't get to see Diary of a Chambermaid, but the schedule for that day is a little difficult for me, and seeing one less movie can be forgiven.  (Though seriously, why Victor Mature as a replacement?] By contrast, I'm very annoyed that Canadians don't get to see Foreign Correspondent, Grand Illusion or To be or not to Be.  The first one is most peculiar, since it's not as if there weren't other Hitchcock movies on television on both TCM and Canadian TV.  And it is striking that only a limited number of movies are consistently kicked off the TCM Canada schedule.

YouTube says that Lionsgate and Radio Canada are blocking Grand Illusion, so you might want to take the matter up with them, since they appear to own the Canadian rights.

It's so frustrating.

 

A movie I haven't see since the mid 70's is scheduled for Faye Dunaway day in August - it's the first title I went looking for when I heard she was getting a day this year and I was overjoyed to see it listed!

 

That was short-lived. I was crushed upon checking the Canadian schedule to find it's blacked-out up here.

 

I'm really supposed to believe that the obscure, long-forgotten 'Oklahoma Crude' (1973) has rights being withheld by some mysterious Canadian? Come on TCM - TRY A LITTLE HARDER!

This is just a reply in general.

 

RadioCanada is the French-language version of the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) up here in the Great White North.

It broadcasts in all parts of Canada and is available in Ontario on CBLFT out of Toronto (cable channel 5 where I am) and on CBOFT out of Ottawa.

 

"Grand Illusion" I watched a few months ago (March 15) on TFO:

TFO is the French-language version of TVOntario, basically.

It's available on cable channel 19 where I live (TCM is on channel 52).

 

CineTFO airs classic films - Hollywood and foreign.

Most films are with French subtitles or dubbed in French (French films are in the original).

I have seen English-language films with French subtitles aired.

In that case, you don't need your French language knowledge as you can listen to the characters speak English in the flick.

Of course, if you don't understand French, you are SOL as far as TFO is concerned (except when they air an English-language film).

But it's just one example of a TV channel in Canada that airs classic films.

Personally, I'm happy with what TCM offers and understand that stuff happens and TCM has to make substitutions for films that some other entity has the rights to in Canada.

But that's just me...

 

And I'm no expert on the rights issue. I have no idea if having the rights for Canada for a French-language or foreign film with French subtitles preclude any other version of the film being aired in Canada?

I don't know.

 

Anyway, I guess I'm trying to say that if a film on TCM isn't available in Canada, you might find it on another channel up here north of the 49th (parallel north).

It's also much to-do to type up the changes, but what the hey, if I have time, I can do it, eh...

"Now Playing" magazine will identify films not available in Canada, but doesn't provide the replacement film. You need to check the online schedule for Canada for that.

I must say the TF0 schedule is very impressive, what with broadcasting Berlin Alexanderplatz and the television version of Fanny and Alexander, as well as Raul Ruiz movies.
