***** censored words?

As I've been roaming around the boards and trying to get the hang of the new format here I notice that several words I've used in old posts have been **** out.  "Nudity"  and "murder" seem to be on the hit list, why?

Most web forums have what is called word filters to keep posters from flaming others with what used to be called "bad language" but is now much more commonplace in every day speech.. The one for these new boards needs to be revised as too many ordinary words are getting beeped and even the names of some actors are getting caught in it.

The techs have been fairly good about getting some of the opening day glitches ironed out but with it being the weekend, the word filter may not get adjusted until next week.

Yes, I saw that Dick Powell was getting "bleeped out" and someone got around this this by using Di-ck Powell.

Di-ck actually looks more offensive somehow.

I notice one guy was able to type Dick Haymes without a problem.  But I've seen this in other sites.

As I type this, I'm wondering if I type the word cockney, will it "asterisk" out, as it does in other sites I follow?

At first, I had trouble referring to the common first name shared by famous actors O'Toole and Sellers. But I've noticed that the name now sails through without asterisks. Maybe the word filter is becoming sentient and knows the difference between a common name and a ****.

Here's a simple enough test:  racist Jew

EDIT:  Looks like you're right.  It's a Festivus miracle!

EDIT #2:  Unfortunately the miracle also dropped this comment to the bottom of my page, even though I was responding to the comment on the top of the page.

Just minutes ago, I used the word "c h u n k" in a reply in another thread, and IT was asterisked out!

Is that word a profane slang for something that I'm not aware of?

Sepiatone   P.S.  I didn't space it at the time because I thought it was harmless.

Maybe it's too close to a derogatory namw for a Chinese person.

Last night I tried to post the name of the flop house FCDobbs stayed in, in Tampico, but the filter blocked one of the words.

The name, in English, is The Black Bear, but the Spanish is The Oso N e g r o. So what resulted was The Oso Negro.

With so many disallowed words now, I've gotten into the habit of "Preview Post" to find out where the asterisks will be, then modifying.

It seems as each day passes, words are being brought back from exile in asterisk land.  I don't think we will get them all back.  Here, let me try this:  Bastard.  I typed bas  ****.

This is too funny.  We have bastard now,  But I typed it with a space and it asterisked the last syllable.

So, now:

hell

damn

crap

nazi

****--a dog, a female dog.

Didn't know there was a preview post option;  that is a good idea.     While I understand why certain words would be censored it does appear that many words are censored just because they could be used in a negative context;  i.e.  the words themselves are not bad words.      e.g.  it is my understanding that the 4 letter word related to people in Gentleman's Agreement is censored.   If this is true then the software is assuming any use of this word would always be in a negative context.    That is crazy.

Since there's nothing tamer than Gilbert and Sullivan, I was wondering how a certain song from The Mikado would fare. Here's the first verse, only lost one word:

On a tree by a river a little tom-****
Sang "Willow, titwillow, titwillow"
And I said to him, "Dicky-bird, why do you sit
Singing 'Willow, titwillow, titwillow'"
"Is it weakness of intellect, birdie?" I cried
"Or a rather tough worm in your little inside"
With a shake of his poor little head, he replied
"Oh, willow, titwillow, titwillow!"

And to quote another song:

It's getting better all the time (can't get no worse).

the software is assuming any use of this word would always be in a negative context.    That is crazy.

The software was created by a company named: Invision Power Services Incorporated. The list of banned words is a compilation of all words which were banned by moderators of sites which use their software.

The list is an integral part of new installations so that site moderators do not have to create their own lists during the mad-scramble time of changing to new software.

Moderators are able to modify the list to suit their site. It appears they are doing so here but users are having more immediate problems and so the moderators are addressing those issues first. I expect the modification to the lists will proceed slowly for some time.

Sans,

Thanks for saying that! There have been posters having issues with re-registering and that has taken precedent this weekend over the word filter.

The techs are working on the weekend, to make sure that people encountering registration problems are able to access the boards.

Hopefully, as re-registering posters encounter fewer problems, the techs will be able to concentrate more on the word filter and other glitches.

I doubt TCM has unlimited resources to spend in the tech department but they are trying hard to get everyone from the old boards migrated over as quickly as possible.

I know I would rather see posters from the old boards get the help they need in being able to post here than concentrating on the word filter.

Jumped over to the "Pre code" forum to see if anything new had appeared and found ****'s all over the place! Really? You can't say "s*e*x" or 'b*i*s*e*x*u*a*l" or "h*o*o*k*e*r" anything similar?(I'm not 100% sure that's what was under the ****, but based on context, I think so)

Holy moly. It's like living under the Production code. Wonder if you can say nude? or gay? (apparently, yes, you can)
