As much as I would like some merch, I’m not sure my friends would understand what I was trying to say.  😉

It’s surprising that these issues have persisted this long - haven’t there been online schedules for going on say 20+ years?

Maybe when everyone gets back from holiday vacations…

Mon., 1-6,   for                                     Mary Astor......

B/W - 62 m

genre_NONE_expanded.gif

Synopsis:  Astor was fighting a child custody battle against her vindictive ex-husband, who sought revenge by taking away her young daughter, Marylyn. Although nude selfies have recently been used by an ex-husband to bring down his politician wife, and are occasionally used today to blackmail celebrities, Astor's 1930s version was a stolen, secret diary, full of explicit details of her love affairs that her husband leaked to the press. It threatened to cost Astor the custody of her child and destroy her career

DirAlexa Foreman

"....... Foreman, a veteran TCM researcher, was inspired to make Scandal: The Trial of Mary Astor after learning more about Astor's life when she was named as a TCM Star of the Month in 2014 at the suggestion of the late TCM host and film historian Robert Osborne.

...... with narration by actress Lee Grant, was a two-year labor of love, encompassing several interviews, including film critics Molly Haskell and Leonard Maltin; David Wyler, son of Dodsworth director William Wyler; and Astor's 84-year-old daughter Marylyn Thorpe Roh, who was four years old at the time of the trial. ..."

Thanks mr6666 for posting the info on The St. Valentine's Day Massacre.  Minor correction, the start time is actually 10:15 pm ET.

There's also another missing premiere coming up on Thursday the 9th.  Here's the list of premieres for the next few days:

* Jan 8 - The St. Valentine's Day Massacre (1967) (10:15 pm ET 100 min.) (* not listed)
Jan 9 - I Am Somebody (1970) (short) (10:00 pm ET 45 min. window) (visible on the schedule)
* Jan 9 - Before Stonewall (1984) (doc.) (1:00 am ET 105 min.) (* not listed)

After that, the next missing premiere is on the 15th.

The good news is that there is a relatively long list of premieres in the January schedule.  The bad news is that many of them are currently not showing up in the tcm.com listings.

Synopsis:  Once Upon a Time in America takes place in New York City, following a group of Jewish gangsters over the course of five decades: from their childhood, through their exploits during Prohibition and ending with their reunion later in life. "..... The film received glowing reviews from critics and was well-received by audiences at the festival, who gave the film an enthusiastic 15-minute standing ovation.

Unfortunately, American audiences did not see this original version of Leone's film, but instead a drastically edited 139-minute cut carried out by The Ladd Company (the American distributors for the film), which not only removed 90 minutes, but also inexplicably and recklessly took artistic license by rearranging scenes into chronological order--all without Leone's consent and input. The result was devastating, leading to a disastrous box office turnout, with critics panning what amounted to a hollow shell of Leone's masterwork and what would be the director's last film. As Roger Ebert quipped, after seeing both the Cannes release (known as the "European Cut") and the hacked-up American version, "This was a murdered movie..."

Film critic Dennis Schwartz liked the film and discussed the political and social aspects of the film. Soon after making this film, the director was blacklisted because of his leftist positions on social and political issues. It's a superb characterization of America's thirst for crime and violence; one of the most powerful statements ever from a Hollywood film about the class divide in America and the yellow rag press that incites the public with poisonous newspaper coverage to sell papers. It calls attention to something about the 'cowboy attitude' in Americans that they don't like to acknowledge about themselves, but Europeans are quite aware of ..........."

😧 Cyril Endfield. Frank Lovejoy, Kathleen Ryan, Richard Carlson, Lloyd Bridges, Katherine Locke, Adele Jergens, Renzo Cesara.

Husband and father Lovejoy can't find a job, so he reluctantly helps slick Bridges in a series of robberies . . . but he isn't prepared for kidnapping and murder. Very impressive independent film noir indicts yellow journalism and lynch-mob violence, but doesn't let the criminals off the hook. He is now working the night shift in a fancy hotel and a reluctant member of a group of ex-SS seeking to hide their pasts by destroying documents and killing any possible witnesses to their war crimes. The two rekindle their twisted relationship in the porter's apartment until the Nazi cabal forces them into the open

DirLiliana Cavani CastDirk Bogarde , Charlotte Rampling , Philippe Leroy-Beaulieu .

"..... "The Night Porter is a provocative and problematic film."

This mid-'70s picture fits pretty neatly into the pejorative category of what many have called "Nazi chic" or what critic Pauline Kael dubbed "Come-Dressed-as-the-Sick-Soul-of-Europe parties." Indeed, as Insdorf points out, "it can be seen as an exercise in perversion and exploitation of the Holocaust for the sake of sensationalism." Reviewers at the time of the film's release were not so restrained, calling it "as nasty as it is lubricious...despicable" (Roger Ebert); "a piece of junk...romantic pornography" (Vincent Canby); and from Kael herself, "humanly and aesthetically offensive," granting it a dubious feminist distinction in proving that "women can make junk just like men." ...........

"In addition to David Hare's Academy Award-nominated screenplay, The Hours features an incredibly impressive cast, including strong performances by three of Hollywood's top actresses: Nicole Kidman (Virginia Woolf), Julianne Moore (Laura Brown) and Meryl Streep (Clarissa Vaughan), as well as supporting performances ..........

The popularity and critical praise for the novel The Hours and its film adaptation was completely unexpected by both Michael Cunningham and his publisher. When asked if he knew he had written a bestseller and that it would be adapted to a feature-length film, Cunningham said, "Neither I nor anyone involved with the book--my publisher, my agent--thought anything about this: this is my arty little novel, it will sell a few thousand copies and then march with whatever dignity it can muster to the remainders tables. And, really, everything that's happened has been a surprise."
