allthumbs Posted April 8, 2014 just before The Big Switch to the new boards, there was a listing of virtually all of The Essentials selections back to the early 2000's. please have a moderator find that listing and re-post it on The Essentials topic board. the transfer was done for SOTM and that will be quite handy. mrroberts Posted April 11, 2014 Here's hoping that the new postings here pertain mostly to the films involved instead of the endless whining about who is providing the opening and closing comments that take up just a few minutes of air time.
DownGoesFrazier Posted April 11, 2014 Here's hoping that the new postings here pertain mostly to the films involved instead of the endless whining about who is providing the opening and closing comments that take up just a few minutes of air time. Since the viewer is confronted with the hosts' personalities and comments "right out of the box", it's understandable why they would assume exaggerated importance. VP19 Posted May 25, 2014 As a Carole Lombard fan, I'm delighted to see two of her films make this season's Essentials (though I note "To Be Or Not To Be" is also an Essentials Jr. selection). It always seemed that one of Carole's films would be the one shown after an Essential, usually one starring Katharine Hepburn -- that happened at least twice in recent years. I'm particularly pleased to see "Twentieth Century" make the cut; I'm eager to hear Drew Barrymore's thoughts on her grandfather's brilliant performance, plus I sense Lombard is one of her favorites. Cyrion Posted June 16, 2014 Let me offer a possible list of essential classic horror films.
IreneBertoni Posted July 14, 2014 I found an article in Vanity Fair online that lists all of the films that Rob Reiner had planned to host in 2001, when The Essentials first began. Actually, they say there were 26 films, but I only see Elmer Gantry and the first four mentioned and then 20 more at the end. So that only adds up to 25. In any case, this is the list of films and the link to the article is at the bottom: Citizen Kane Casablanca The Producers To Kill a Mockingbird Elmer Gantry North by Northwest Dr. Strangelove In the Heat of the Night White Heat From Here to Eternity Singin’ in the Rain The Maltese Falcon Inherit the Wind A Night at the Opera The Birdman of Alcatraz Gaslight Dial M for Murder The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance The Bank Dick The Treasure of the Sierra Madre A Streetcar Named Desire Top Hat Yankee Doodle Dandy Witness for the Prosecution Some Like It Hot http://variety.com/2001/film/news/tcm-enlists-reiner-for-pic-series-1117791857/

What sticks out to me is Dial M for Murder. To me it is one of the weaker Hitchcock films. If I was picking a Hitchcock film to show along with North by Northwest there are at least 6 films I would of picked before Dial M.

R. O. said it right out, TWENTIETH CENTURY was John Barrymore's finest moment. But I will still take Carole in MY MAN GODFREY as her best.
