This is a cool idea, skimpole. I just prepared a 1964 list with two Z films at the top (Zulu and Zorba). Don't think I've seen an X film other than X, Y, and Zee and X-Men 2, and neither is a favorite.

There could be some really tough choices. Children of Paradise or Citizen Kane? Of course, Les enfants du paradis would work for E.

What a fun idea. X might be tough as well as choosing between two favorites of the same letter (Singin' in the Rain vs Shadow of a Doubt vs Strangers on a Train vs Stalag 17 vs The Sting vs Some LIke It Hot vs Scrooge vs Seven Brides for Seven Brothers vs Support Your Local Gunfighter...), but I'm gonna do it too:

A - Apartment, The

B - Ball of Fire

C - Charade

D - Duck Soup

E - Empire Strikes Back, The

F - Fantasia

G - Great Race, The

H - How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying

I - It Happened One Night

J - Jaws

K – Kind Hearts and Coronets

L - Laura

M - Mister Roberts

N - Night to Remember, A (1958)

O – On the Town

P - Philadelphia Story, The

Q – Quiet Man, The

R - Remember the Night

S - Stalag 17

T - Trouble With Harry, The

U - Up

V - Vertigo

W - White Christmas

X – Xīyángjìng (Shadow Magic) ß helps to know foreign films J

Y - Yankee Doodle Dandy

Z – Zulu (since I can’t think of another Z movie I like—only seen it once)

As a bonus, numbers:

12 Angry Men

1776

7 Brides for 7 Brothers

7 Samurai

36 Hours

& The 39 Steps :)

(as with all of these lists, ask me again tomorrow and I'll pick a different "S" movie) :)

That was difficult.  There are so many movies I love that start with the same letter, it was difficult to make a decision.

You mean the following on Games and Trivia:

*A to Z of Movies*

I would have posted there but it would seem to me that they list one movie after the other instead of this thread which is one movie title per letter of the alphabet. A lot different "game".

Don't mean to squabble, but anyway, what difference does it make to have yet another thread about a listing of movies. Isn't that what all the threads here are about?

SansFin, I love all the Kurosawa & Miyazaki on your list, plus WE'RE NO ANGELS.

There are so many excellent choices on these lists!

I thank you for your kind words.

Many on your list were within the last three or four as I narrowed the lists for each letter. I know that several would have definitely been in my list if I had limited my choices to movies in English.

I had wished to do separate lists for animation and comedy and etc. but I found that when dealing with individual genres that some letters had only one choice and it was pathetic.

I find it very interesting to see the variety in many lists.

People who want to pad their post totals should participate in that "A tyo Z of Movies" in Games and Trivia. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to come up with a movie beginning with a particular letter.

I started deliberating this to death, so backtracked to make a list of the film (or, in some cases, two films) that first sprang to mind upon thinking of my favorite for each letter - not what I think is the best, just which is my favorite.

A – Adam’s Rib (tie: Another Thin Man)

B – Bringing Up Baby (tie: Boys Don’t Cry)

C – Clue

D – Dead Again

E – Easy A

F – A Fish Called Wanda

G – Gaslight (tie: Georgia)

H – Holiday

I – Inside Job

J – Julie & Julia

K – The Kentucky Fried Movie (tie: Kissing Jessica Stein)

L – Libeled Lady (tie: Little Miss Sunshine)

M – My Man Godfrey (tie: Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House)

N – 9 to 5

O – Office Space

P – The Philadelphia Story

Q – The Quiet American

R – The Right Stuff

S – Sunshine Cleaning

T – Thelma & Louise (tie: The Thin Man)

U – The Uninvited

V – Vertigo (tie: V.I. Warshawski)

Y – Y Tu Mama Tambien

Z – Zero Dark Thirty (I really had to stretch for a Z film; apparently, I don't like many of them)

If you can't think of one for a particular letter, just breeze right past it and keep going. Reminiscent of the Violent Femmes' "Kiss Off", in which items one through ten are being listed, and which includes the line, "I don't remember what "8" is for".

I started my list by making an A-Z column. Then I filled in all the letters I easily knew what my picks were. Then, I thought about the others. I also looked up some favorite directors on the IMDb to give me ideas.

I actually started mine by listing all my absolute favorite movies, then alphabetized it (I was surprised how many letters were covered already), then narrowed it down by letter (S being the hardest). Then I looked at my video list to get ideas for the letters I hadn't filled in. :)
