9) Clark Gable was given an ultimatum by MGM to marry Carole Lombard or give up the relationship because of publicity about movie star couples virtually living together or having intimate long-term relationships without the benefit of wedlock. 

 This kind of publicity could allow them to enforce the morals clause in his contract.
