emwriterdude
I know, I know, this is Turner CLASSIC Movies, but any movie fan has to talk about some of the movies released in theatres right now, every once in a while, so why don't I start that right now. I am 16 years old, and I probably see almost every movie that is released, and I even go for the indie and foreign pics, which are usually my favorite. The best movie in release right now has to be Crash, which was a wonderful and thoughtful piece on race relations in LA. I thought the new Batman movie was really good as well, drifting away from campy humor and focusing more on the darkness that is Batman, even though I still love Batman Returns. War of the Worlds was a very look movie too, with some great special effects, and intense and well made scenes. I had some problems with the last fifteen minutes, but the rest of the film over shadows it. I really enjoyed Cinderella Man, as well. On the indie front, I could say that I loved a movie called Me and You and Everyone We Know. I also liked an Enron documentary, and a penguin documentary called March of the Penguins. But, Hollywood releases a never ending cycle of bad movies, and that is apparant with High Tension, The Honeymooners remake, among others. Bewitched was entertaining for the most part, but nothing to write home about. Anybody have any opinions on some movies out in theatres right now, or new to video? And don't hate me because I'm not only on classic movies for a small bit. You need an even distribution to classics and modern, is what I would say. emwriterdude
Oh, right, I also enjoyed Heights, on the indie front.
bhryun
I'm actually looking forward to seeing March of the Penguins. And I'll probably end up seeing Cinderella Man as well. I'm sure I won't catch them in the theater tho - I live in a very small town and we don't always get every movie and many come and go within a week's time so it's easier for me to wait on dvd. I don't think I've heard of Crash. To be honest, unless something truly appeals to me as likely being something of great impact - I won't pay current admission price. In the last 10 or so years I've probably been inside a movie theater a total of 3 times. Two of those times were for children's movies my son wanted to see. One of the more recent movies I saw on dvd was Wooly Boys. I don't know exactly when that originally came out but it was a nice story and I was actually a little surprisingly impressed with both Kris Kristofferson's and Peter Fonda's performances. I've never really cared for either of them as actors. It's a movie worth watching and best of all age isn't a factor regarding content. LOL, ok so I just checked imdb and found that Wooly Boys came out in 2001... so it's not so recent but it was completely new to me. I don't think anyone here will "hate" you because you enjoy current films in addition to classics!
KeithFromKC
CRASH was a really unexpected surprise, emwriterdude. What a good little film, and I never thought I would be impressed by a Matt Dillon performance. Thandie Newton is also wonderful and an actress that we don't get to see enough of. I am really looking forward to ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW, as well as HEIGHTS. We have a few good indie theatres here in Kansas City, but some of the arthouse films take a while longer to make it here, if at all. I am going to see MARCH OF THE PENGUINS today, in fact, at my favorite little indie theater. I also saw the enlightening ENRON documentary, ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM, at this same theater. I bring it up, because here in KC, we have a film critic for one of our news channels, Shawn Edwards, who is just incredibly inept. He christened the new BATMAN movie (which I thought was a mess, personally), "The film of the year," and then dismissed the Enron Documentary because there was "too much talking." I kid you not. Isn't that what you expect of a documentary? He also called WHITE CHICKS one of the best films of last year, and yet didn't like SIDEWAYS, which was my favorite film of last year. How this man got his job confounds me! Anyway, I know that some people are disengaged from most of what comes out of Hollywood these days, but as you say, there are good movies out there and I think it's OK to discuss them here. I mean, we all are movie fans here, right? I can't imagine only liking films before a certain time period. If it does upset someone, maybe we could open a thread for modern films in the GENRE forum. When it comes to new films, my favorite film in awhile was MAD HOT BALLROOM, which is a documentary which revolves around an annual program in which fifth-graders in New York are taught Ballroom dancing for Ten weeks, and then compete in a city-wide competition. It's nothing too deep, but is funny and moving and a great alternative to the big summer releases.......
emwriterdude
Yes! I agree with you! Sideways was my fav. from last year as well. Mad Hot Ballroom was pretty good, although I feel that it went on a bit too long. If you want, I could give you my best/worst of list of 2004. I still have it on my computer, somewhere. . .
