It gets extra points just for having Danny Kaye in it! I think I like it just as much. It's very engaging. I was surprised to see Maltin only gave it 2.5 stars. I'd give it a solid 3. BALL OF FIRE is slightly better and I'd give that one a 3.5

I think HEAVEN'S GATE gets a bad rap. It's definitely too long, but there is considerable artistic merit and the performances are decent.

But I don't think HEAVEN'S GATE is a weak picture. I think it was unfairly maligned when it first came out and ironically, it does need to be edited. But because the filmmakers and the fans feel it's a masterpiece, they've gone the other direction and restored extra footage, making it even longer than it needs to be! The cinematography and period detail is exceptional.

True, but a lot of films based on novels in the studio era were watered down, particularly James Cain's novels MILDRED PIERCE, DOUBLE INDEMNITY and THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE. Great movies, but they all had to be watered down considerably because of the Production Code being enforced at that time.

Cain's novel for Postman was actually adapted first in Italy, as OSSESSIONE (1943) and it's much more faithful to his writing and conveys his intentions with the story. Though the Garfield-Turner version is very good, it's a lesser effort compared to the Italian version. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0035160/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0
