TCM and Other Sources for Classic Film

This one is "almost" as good as the original (my opinion, of course.) It gets extra points just for having Danny Kaye in it!

I think I like it just as much. It's very engaging. I was surprised to see Maltin only gave it 2.5 stars. I'd give it a solid 3. BALL OF FIRE is slightly better and I'd give that one a 3.5

HEAVEN'S GATE with Kris Kristofferson

I do love THE SHOOTIST.  HEAVEN'S GATE is another story though....

I think HEAVEN'S GATE gets a bad rap. It's definitely too long, but there is considerable artistic merit and the performances are decent.

It has a great cast, I'll give it that. But I tried watching it 3 times and have yet to find any artistic merit to me.

Guess it was just lost on me.

Well you can have a strong cast in a weak picture. But I don't think HEAVEN'S GATE is a weak picture. I think it was unfairly maligned when it first came out and ironically, it does need to be edited. But because the filmmakers and the fans feel it's a masterpiece, they've gone the other direction and restored extra footage, making it even longer than it needs to be!

The cinematography and period detail is exceptional.

Yes, one of her best. His too. Glad TCM is airing the other one, since we seldom see Paramount precodes on the channel.

It's probably not as good as GODFREY but it will be nice to see it.

Maltin gives it only 2.5 stars which I feel is wrong. It's a 3 star offering.

Also, it's nice to see Barbara Bel Geddes try her hand at lighter material for a change.

KINGS ROW is quite good, though watered down considerably since much of what was in the novel was censored by the production code office.

True, but a lot of films based on novels in the studio era were watered down, particularly  James Cain's novels MILDRED PIERCE, DOUBLE INDEMNITY and THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE.

Great movies, but they all had to be watered down considerably because of the Production Code being enforced at that time.

Cain's novel for Postman was actually adapted first in Italy, as OSSESSIONE (1943) and it's much more faithful to his writing and conveys his intentions with the story.

Though the Garfield-Turner version is very good, it's a lesser effort compared to the Italian version.
