TopBilled
Yesterday I was toying with the idea of revamping the format for this thread. I wasn't sure if it would be the right thing to do or not. The topic would still remain as 'TCM and Other Sources for Classic Film.' But it would be more thematic. For example, when TCM has a birthday tribute for Jean Harlow or John Garfield, then the day's main post could focus on that. If TCM is not showing anything particularly noteworthy (a judgment call obviously) then I can spotlight films for an actor or actress that TCM seldom plays, like Betty Hutton or Allan Lane (as examples), and discuss where some of their films can be found outside TCM. Does that make sense? The reason I want to reformat is because I feel the need to make this thread more creative. Also, I think it would be fun if it were a bit more star-driven, director-based and sometimes genre-based. Overall, the goal has not changed-- to help people discover classic films on TCM and in other places. So, this being said, I am going to change over to the new format on March 3rd, after the current 31 Days of Oscar on TCM. If it doesn't work, then we can return to what I had been doing, right? Thanks.

CaveGirl
Hey, TopBilled! Besides all the obvious reasons to watch the fabulous fare you have highlighted in your post, I must call to attention to the fact that in "The Woman In Green" that one can see the uncredited Count Rudolf De Stefenelli as a member of the Mesmer Club. He was Hollywood royalty and always worth watching!

Emily Dean
When I am at a loss on TCM I check out GET-TV as in today's schedule with a showing of one of my favourites, YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU, and others seldom seen on TCM. Additionally they have some great old TV shows that either I never watched due possibly to being on after my bedtime or shown on US television when I was living overseas. They do a lot of repeats so there is ample opportunity to catch a film while TCM is desolate of your preferred viewing. Saturday I happened to catch a very interesting Western TV show called Nichols, or something like that, with James Garner as a sheriff in a town at the turn of the century. He used autos and a motorcycle which seemed incongruous when I first turned it on. As usual James Garner is understated and great to watch and Margot Kidder is the love interest along with cameos by actors of the time. I had to run up to the computer and research it...and found out its history as well as the fact that we were overseas at the time, consequently I was engaged more with BBC and ITV shows at the time. I then researched TV shows of the periods we were gone to see what else I may have missed. Along with this and other Westerns I watch the Judy Garland TV show of 1963, specials like Andy Williams and Bing Crosby along with Monday showings of the Merv Griffin Show.

I can't think of any other series where the main character was gunned down and avenged by his no nonsense twin brother in the same episode, and the final shot had him, in effect, telling the townspeople to go blank themselves because none of them came to his brother's aid after they begged him to be their Sheriff. I think most of the staff for this show moved over with him to Rockford. I also liked the short-lived Bret Maverick he did in the early 80s, which has been rerun on the Encore Westerns Channel. CaveGirl
Hey TB, thanks for reminding me about "Nightmare Alley". Who can't dig a movie about carnies and this one with Power as the Geek is the best. I always watch to see antiquated stage actor Taylor Holmes, who is wonderful. He was the father of Phillips Holmes and also voiced the King in a Disney animated film, maybe "Sleeping Beauty"?

CaveGirl
"Bigger Than Life" is an incredible film. It is about the dangers of cortisone, and how it was first used diagnostically but was difficult to prescribe in proper dosages. James Mason puts in a bravura performance as a mild mannered teacher who is prescribed the medicine but in such excessive dosages that he turns into a megalomaniac. As usual being that it is Mason his acting is beyond the pale, and the film is rivetting. A little known film but one which is extremely rewarding to view. Thanks for highlighting it, TB. I so appreciate your taking the time to give these daily previews of films to come!

I so appreciate your taking the time to give these daily previews of films to come! You are welcome. By the way, Marilyn Monroe did a cameo in BIGGER THAN LIFE, playing a nurse, as a favor to Nicholas Ray. But the Fox execs made him cut it from the final print, because they were afraid Marilyn's agent would use it as part of the films owed on her contract. I have wondered if that footage is still in some vault somewhere.

TopBilled
Just a reminder that after tomorrow, when 31 Days of Oscar ends, I will be reformatting the thread a bit. On some days I will focus on what TCM is airing, while other days will look at Hulu offerings or Amazon Prime offerings. Every group of films will be related thematically and I will be playing up a lot of stars' and directors' birthdays-- many that do not get recognized on TCM. Thanks!
