TopBilled
Let's not overthink and complicate something so simple. "Views" simply means the number of times board members took a look at a particular thread. Sepiatone I am sure there are threads where ideas are over-thought and over-complicated. What I want to add/correct to your above statement, is that I believe thread views are also counted when guests open the threads (so it would not just be board members). Also, we do have to mention that when a thread is opened, we have no way of knowing whether the reader is looking at the newest posts or older posts/pages earlier in the thread. primosprimos
Actually Sepia, if one would compute the "view-to-reply rate" of ANY thread located within this website(and probably ALL website forums), a "10%" rate would AND could be considered one hell of a good percentage, ya know. In fact, I don't think ANY thread started by ANYONE ever "achieves" such a "high rate", and especially after a thread has run its course and has lost the interest of the people inclined to post replies within it. (...and be it for reasons of a possible "sidetracking" from its original premise OR NOT!!!!!) Thread views mean nothing. To believe otherwise is proof of being a legend in one's own mind. TopBilled
Updates: Eight threads debut on the list (meaning they have over 1,000 views) and are marked in bold. One of the threads is an old thread I created nearly two years ago when Greer Garson was SOTM. I have not added any new content to it, and that tells me she is very popular among TCM viewers/message board users. Several threads gained a significant number of views since I last did this in October. The Lauren Bacall thread was hot; the Me-TV thread was red hot (no surprise); the SONG OF THE SOUTH thread gained almost a thousand views after it was locked; the Mother Dolores Hart thread continued to do well though no new content was added; Ruth Roman's thread was hot; and the Kay Francis appreciation thread zoomed to over 2,200. The Kay Francis thread's popularity is remarkable, because her films have not been featured much recently on TCM, and also there was a rival thread about her on the boards at the same time as mine. That tells me people can't get enough Kay Francis. I have almost 50 threads over the 1,000 view mark since the upgrade in April. Several are carry overs from before the upgrade and had their original totals erased when the data transferred over from the old system. That means if they are on this list, they started over and really have had many more total views. Dargo
then should we also consider MOST LIKED CONTENT? http://forums.tcm.com/index.php?/best-content/ Wow! Well all I can say after venturing to your link here mr6, is that I was sure glad to find none of MY posts were liked so much by the assembled masses as to be shown there! 'Cause I'm thinkin' havin' one of MINE there would of course mean that I MIGHT have to probably consider changing that tagline I've got above Groucho's face up there and which I think best "personifies" me, FROM "An Acquired Taste" and TO somethin' more along the lines of "Mr. Popularity!" And THAT sure ain't never gonna happen, NOR do I think I ever WANT it to! (...I mean I DO have "an image" to uphold around here, ya know!) speedracer5
Does the board tally up another "view" when the thread creator looks at it? Not trying to be facetious, I'm genuinely asking. I've opened up many threads to see what the thread was about and quickly closed it when I realized I found the thread uninteresting and/or didn't want to participate in the conversation that was going on. I don't think my "view" would indicate quality. I agree that replies are what count. Otherwise, with little or no replies, the thread would disappear into the abyss of other played out threads. If a thread continues to generate quality discussion and attract new contributors and continues to stay on the front page of active threads, then that thread would be a success. If the thread originator keeps adding replies to their thread, but nobody else does, it's not successful.
DougieB
I believe this phenomenon is akin to people rubbernecking when they come upon an accident. This really says it all and it was on the first page. If my cat throws up on the rug, everyone in the living room is going to want to "view" the hairball. Viewing does not equal approval/affirmation. When wildfires start on the board more people check in more regularly. Fanning the flames does the rest.

I think that if someone keeps opening a thread, when they already know what the contents will be, then they are in a way endorsing it and keeping the thread hot. It doesn't matter what their motives are, they do become a party to its visibility and ultimately its success. There are many threads where the originator does keep adding replies, because they are providing on-going information. We have someone who does that with the Fox and Linda Darnell threads. That does not mean the thread is unsuccessful-- it means that data collection and dissemination continues to occur and others are able to comment on the meaning of it. Okay, I need to go get the ingredients for Lana Turner's scampi. It takes me an hour to get ready before I go out the front door. There's nothing like having people see you look your best in the seafood section of the local market.
Sepiatone
In other forums I'm a member of, I usually notice a HUGE difference in the "View/reply" ratio. For example, one thread might have, listed, 200 views, but only 20 replies. ( remember, the figures ARE hypothetical). All THIS means is that although 200 people took a LOOK at the thread, only 20 figured they had something worthwhile to ADD, so THEY replied. Unlike HERE, where often people with NOTHING worthwhile to add DO reply! ( Hey----I just couldn't resist!) Anyway, in another forum, I put it to the test---- I noted the "view" number before clicking into one thread. AFTER I closed out of it, the "view" number increased by ONE. So, I WENT IN AGAIN, and got the same result. Sepiatone

What's remarkable is that something as trivial as views can bolster an ego. Egos are usually more voracious than that. In view of your obsession with views, I (for one) would be interested to know if you should ever accomplish anything of real consequence. Perhaps this won't be necessary for you. The number of views a thread get seems to be the pinnacle of success. So what do views mean, I never thought it meant much at all, who knew that it could be so tied up with self-esteem.
