jamesjazzguitar
Which classic film would you wish to see unencumbered? These Three, based on the play The Children's Hour.
hepclassic
These Three, based on the play The Children's Hour. Have you seen 1961's The Children's Hour- because that version is a direct adaption to the Lillian Hellman play, and not the changed version from 1936.

Yes, I have seen the Hepburn\Garner\Maclaine 1961 version. This one is a lot more faithful to the play.
hepclassic
I did hear a radio program adapting "These Three" and it didn't have the same effect as "The Children's Hour." Censorship bodies and sexual shaming aside, the "lie" was actually commonplace at the time, so Breen really did S C R E W that cookie.

The movie version of These Three is also very watered down to such a point one wonder what the fuss is all about. The play didn't hold back. According to Wiki the play running on Broadway was breaking a NYC law but the play was so popular that the law wasn't enforced. So in regards to the theme of this thread; If there was no production code there could of been a movie true to what the play was about made during the 30's instead of having to wait around 30 years!

After "These Three" premiered, William Wyler did say "Lillian Hellman's play has not yet been produced in Hollywood." Lo and behold- he goes on to direct the real version in 1961!
