bhryun
Just curious...was Bogart the "Gerber Baby"? I thought I read that somewhere, but I'm not sure. Also, was his speech impediment caused by shrapnel hitting his mouth during the war?
classickels42
I also read that he was the "Gerber Baby" when he was little. About his lip, I heard that he got a splinter in it when he was little and they made up a story about it being injured in the war for publicity. I don't know if this entirely true, but its what I have heard.
coffeedan1927
No, both stories are untrue. Although Bogart's mother, Maud Humphrey Bogart, was a successful commercial illustrator who often used her infant son for a model (most notably for a long-running ad campaign for Mellin's baby food), he was not the model for the Gerber baby, which did not appear on Gerber products or in their advertising until 1928, when Bogart was nearly 30. You can get the whole story here: http://www.snopes.com/movies/actors/bogart.htm The shrapnel story has been debunked in a number of sources; the one that immediately springs to my mind is David Niven's book Bring on the Empty Horses.
