Guest obrienmundy
A few days ago at the IMDb, I started a poll where members would write out ballots of their top 5, 10, 15, or 20 favorites of the 70 Best Picture nominees of the 1940s. It has been going well, but somewhat slowly so far. So I decided to nake this a poll both there and here. What I ask of you is to consider participating in the poll by making your list of favorites (be it 5,10,15,or 20) from the films listed below and then send it by posting your list in this thread or by mailing me a message . The deadline is August 15th. I thank you in advance for your time and consideration. Eligible Films (listed chronologically and then alphabetically) 1940 All This, and Heaven Too Foreign Correspondent The Grapes of Wrath The Great Dictator Kitty Foyle The Letter The Long Voyage Home Our Town The Philadelphia Story Rebecca 1941 Blossoms in the Dust Citizen Kane Here Comes Mr. Jordan Hold Back the Dawn How Green Was My Valley The Little Foxes The Maltese Falcon One Foot in Heaven Sergeant York Suspicion 1942 The Invaders/49th Parallel Kings Row The Magnificent Ambersons Mrs. Miniver The Pied Piper The Pride of the Yankees Random Harvest The Talk of the Town Wake Island Yankee Doodle Dandy 1943 Casablanca For Whom the Bell Tolls Heaven Can Wait The Human Comedy In Which We Serve Madame Curie The More the Merrier The Ox-Bow Incident The Song of Bernadette Watch on the Rhine 1944 Double Indemnity Gaslight Going My Way Since You Went Away Wilson 1945 Anchors Aweigh The Bells of St. Mary's The Lost Weekend Mildred Pierce Spellbound 1946 The Best Years of Our Lives Henry V It's a Wonderful Life The Razor's Edge The Yearling 1947 The Bishop's Wife Crossfire Gentleman's Agreement Great Expectations Miracle on 34th Street 1948 Hamlet Johnny Belinda The Red Shoes The Snake Pit The Treasure of the Sierra Madre 1949 All the King's Men Battleground The Heiress A Letter to Three Wives Twelve O'Clock High
AndyM108
I'm assuming that these were the Oscar nominees, because only that could explain some otherwise bizarre choices and omissions. Wilson over Laura??? In the same order you had them, here are the movies I see as exceptional: 1940 The Letter The Philadelphia Story 1941 The Maltese Falcon 1942 nothing 1943 Casablanca 1944 Double Indemnity Since You Went Away 1945 The Lost Weekend Mildred Pierce 1946 The Best Years of Our Lives (accidentally omitted earlier) It's A Wonderful Life 1947 Crossfire Miracle on 34th Street 1948 The Treasure of the Sierra Madre 1949 All The King's Men A Letter to Three Wives
HelenBaby2
This will probably cause some apoplexy amongst my fellow board members, but here's my favorites on the list. 1940 The Great Dictator All This, and Heaven Too 1941 One Foot in Heaven The Little Foxes 1942 The Magnificent Ambersons Random Harvest Yankee Doodle Dandy 1943 Watch on the Rhine The More the Merrier 1944 Since You Went Away 1945 Mildred Pierce 1946 Best Years of Our Lives The Razor's Edge 1947 Crossfire 1949 Battleground The Heiress

SansFin
I am sorry to say that I can find only nine which I might call favorites. It would be difficult for me to narrow it to five and it would be false padding to add any other to increase it to ten. 1940 Rebecca 1941 Here Comes Mr. Jordan 1942 The Talk of the Town 1943 Casablanca Heaven Can Wait 1944 Double Indemnity 1945 None 1946 None 1947 The Bishop's Wife Miracle on 34th Street 1948 Hamlet 1949 None

speedracer5
Unfortunately, I haven't seen a ton of the nominees; but I'll give you my opinion on the ones I've seen. See below inside your quote. I've erased the ones I didn't like and/or haven't seen, so I can't form an opinion. cmovieviewer
obrienmundy, Wow, there are some amazing movies to choose from in this list! No disrespect intended, but I'm curious what the goal of the survey is. My quick guesses: - list the best movies of the decade in ranked order - determine order to watch the movies in best to worst (if you can't watch them all) - how does current ranking compare with original Academy Awards - research for Family Feud - other? I guess in school I was the troublemaker who asked why? before doing anything. I'm also one that sometimes questions the contest aspect of the Academy Awards. Seems like comparing movies will always be a question of apples and oranges. Not trying to step on toes - everyone is entitled to their opinions.
