NipkowDisc
Watched it I did. A gentlemanly Walter Pidgeon sticks a knife in crime commission chairman slash the big man Eduard Franz's back? Goes home and tells his wife and philosophizes ad nauseum to Barry Sullivan...then winds up letting the beneficiary of his legal skills stick him? Nuts. AndyM108
The only way to view the denouement of The Unknown Man without throwing a brick through the screen (which I felt like doing) is by looking at it as the only permissible ending that would've been allowed by the imperatives of the crazy Production Code. No "murderer", no matter how justified, could ever be depicted as escaping punishment, and I'm sure knowing that would've been a big consolation to Pidgeon's family in real life.
