man prefers older sister, which movie?

I watched this movie a long time ago. 

 

But, basically, a widowed father has two socialite daughters. The older one is much quieter, more serious and strict. A man comes into their lives and is set up with the younger daughter, even though the older daughter obviously likes him (there's a lot of banter). She's ignored because of her age, demeanor, etc. Towards the end the man realises that he's actually in love with the older sister, who eventually becomes less strict etc. I think it was set in Italy. It was in colour.

I was also going to say Holiday except for the movie being in color and set outside the USA.

 

But yea,  only Holiday came to mind.

Holiday isn't set in Italy and isn't in color, Linda (Katharine Hepburn's character) is neither strict nor ignored by Johnny (Cary Grant's character), and she doesn't change characterization over the course of the film.  When I saw the title of the topic, I immediately thought of Holiday, but upon reading the post realized it had to be another film.  Nothing is coming to mind, though.

Maybe Ten Thousand Bedrooms, with Dean Martin. At first, he is engaged to Anna Maria Alberghetti, but eventually falls for her older sister, Eva Bartok. However, there are four sisters, not two.  Walter Slezak plays the father.

Could this be Kiss Before Dying. It stars Robert Wagner and Joanne Woodward. He's evil and actually engaged to both sisters at the same time. Ends up killing the younger and makes it look like suicide.

Not a bad guess Caty.   Now the setting isn't Italy,  but the nice house of the parents the gals live in looks like an Italy type estate.

 

But in that movie Wagner is already dating the older sister and has a fling with the younger one that falls in love with him.

 

That room top scene:  wow the first time I saw this I knew what Wagner was going to do,  but at the same time keep saying to myself;  he isn't really going to do what I think he is going to do,  is he????      When he did,  I jumped out of my seat!

I don't think he's dating Ellen the older sister or hasn't met her until after he kills Dory.

I think you're right.   Wagner goes after the older sister since he can no longer marry into wealth with the younger sister.

This summer I got on an Ira Levin kick and read, among others, A Kiss Before Dying.  I look forward to seeing the movie and hope it doesn't deviate much from his great book.
