normandie7
Are there any fans of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy here? I am a big fan of classic movies, but my ultimate top movie of all the time would be the LOTR trilogy. I suppose I consider it a modern classic. No other movie has made such a profound effect on me. Anyone out there who shares my passion for these movies?
twangman9312
I assume you've read the books then? I read them many times when I was a teenager, and loved them. I'm almost afraid to read them now, for fear that I'll be disappointed. As for the movies, I enjoyed the first one somewhat, and the third one a lot. I really disliked the second one though. It looked amateurish and rushed to me, and had some plots twists (not in the book) that didn't make any sense to me. So it wasn't a suprise when I heard the director's commentary on the DVD. Peter Jackson talked about how if they'd had more time they would have done some things different, special effects would have been better etc.
katyscar11ett
Read Tolkien many years ago - and loved LOTR. Haven't seen the movies yet - I'm afraid they won't be as good as the books, I guess, even though I hear they are. I'm mighty glad that my kids have discovered Tolkien, however, as well as the Star Wars films. :-) Proves Mom ain't quite so stupid after all. lol
normandie7
No, I never read the books and was in fact dragged to the cinema by my husband to see the first movie. I had the full intention to sleep my way through the entire film, but was instead totally blown away by what I saw. Incredible. The amount of detail and craftsmanship gone into these movies is unbelievable. The script, cinematography, special effects, acting, costumes and music are all first class and come together beautifully.
tracey65k
OK, I admit it, I'm a Tolkien groupie...I read the trilogy for the first time when I was 13, and have made a yearly pilgrimage ever since. I loved the movies, Jackson et al did such a thorough job I didn't mind the changes they made, which is usually my biggest gripe with books to movies... katyscar11ett
It's great to read the comments about how great these films are - maybe I'll watch them after all. I've heard it said that even Tolkien would be impressed. *grin* All of my kids friends have the set so I'll borrow one and devote a weekend to the project. hehe Cappucino, popcorn and LOTR - should be fun! tracey65k
katyscarlett-- Oh do! Do see them. And try to get the extended versions, especially of the first one. There's a scene with Merry and Pippin in a pub that's so funny...
normandie7
Indeed, if you intend to watch LOTR trilogy, get your hands on the "special extended DVD edition". Basically, it is director's cut with lots of scenes that add a lovely touch, but were cut out of theatre edition for understandable reason of making the lenght of the movies cinema-audience friendly. Do tell us your verdict after viewing.
