I went to an event in TriBeCa, in lower Manhattan tonight, and walked north afterwards. Just before I got to the subway at Christopher Street, I noticed that I was across the street from this venerable place. I heard them calling out numbers -- it must have been bingo night!

The bingo part made me giggle, but you're right about it being such a historic and powerful signifier of our social history. It's difficult to say what might or might not have happened without the events of those few days, but there's no denying that we now have an indelible timeline to refer to because of them. The movie "Stonewall" was a low-budget but well-meaning attempt to capture the era leading up to those events, especially shocking to a modern audience in the idea that men couldn't dance together as a pair. It's something that's now taken so for granted that many people probably never stop to think that it was something so hard-won. The power of the many only works when the many are visible and the Stonewall riots marked a huge leap forward in that visibility.

Yes -- I checked their website. Monday night is indeed Drag Bingo! Another sign that times have changed, for the better.
