emwriterdude
The fact that I want to see Lolita, but it's on so late, made me wonder, what about a night of Stanley Kubrick?
bhryun
For all the Kubrick fans, that would be great and I'd be in favor of that. I would, however, have my TV off that night. I have little appreciation for Kubrick, and even less upon hearing that he said that Sparticus was his "worst" movie. To me it was the only one worth watching. hehe Different strokes. path40a
TCM airs a lot of Kubrick's films, especially considering that the director only made about a dozen. Fairly regularly, one can see The Killing, Paths of Glory, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, and maybe even The Shining. I really like Spartacus but I can't say for sure if I saw it on TCM or not. I don't think I saw A Clockwork Orange on TCM, but would certainly like to see that one again too. There's really not much else in the director's portfolio besides Full Metal Jacket, Barry Lyndon (which I've not seen), and Eyes Wide Shut, which I wish I hadn't;-)
spencerl964
To path & others on the brilliant & sadly already gone: Stanley Kubrick-(1928-99) I am fairly certain that TCM has aired 19660's mammoth "Spartacus"-(P.S. to tcmprogrammer, please clerify this one?) It's the main inspiration for of course: *"Gladiator" (2000)-(& of course all the would be copies of the latter since it's OSCAR sweep) & *Mel Gibson was said to have studied it for his own date with the ACADEMY, for 1995's *"Braveheart" *P. Ustinov, was quoted as telling his child once what he did for a living-(given "Spartacus' took so-long to complete) & he said> "Spartacus" & it's obviously not a Kubrick-style picture. There was a massive article in "Premiere" about a decade or so back & it was about the struggle between Kubrick & Kirk Douglas over directing the epic! & on that note, a reminder that on Sat-(Aug. 13th) HBO is airing that special with Kirk & *Michael Douglas Like: Scorsese & Hitchcock, Kubrick was up for "The Golden Boy"-(4 noms for Best Direction.) However, his name was never called, at least not for his direction. He did score 1 competitive victory. Doing the visuals himself for: "2001: A Space 0dyssey" (1968) & *Spielberg inherited "A.I." from Stanley. It was his baby, for the most part. To path, on '71's "A Clockwork 0range" I think you hit a bullseye there. TCM has never aired that one. Thank You
