New Challenge

This is kindly warning that: TCM Programming Challenge #28: I Was a Teenage Mutant Femme Fatale will begin month from today on January 11, 2015.

I feel that presenting this information at this time is of import because of major change which may affect how entrants and prospective-entrants approach creation of schedules:

I am removing from this Challenge the usual proscription against Disney-created animated movies.

The reason for this is that I do not know how the new business arrangement between TCM and Disney will affect access to Disney library and I believe it appropriate that Challenge rules reflect all real-world possibilities. Reason for all rules is to present schedules which real-world TCM Programmers might steal borrow with little effort. I would not wish to throttle entrant creativity unnecessarily or have overly-strict rules.

I will place restriction that all such movies appear on one evening only. This is in keeping with current manner of scheduling by TCM of newly-accessible Disney material. These movies will be under normal limits for number of Premieres.

Removal of this proscription is for this Challenge only. Future Challenge-Setters may have more information on which movies might be available to TCM and they will use their best judgement in setting rules for their Challenges.

In other news:

This Challenge will have optional theme of: "Movies TCM Will Never Show." It is to be four movies which TCM has not aired and likely will never air because there is no extant print, rights will never be relinquished or other known reasons. Pornography will not be allowed! These four movies will not count against Premiere Count.

I am considering second optional theme of movies from studios which are severely underrepresented on TCM. Mosfilm is first which comes to mind as major studio with only minor and random presence on TCM. I must wonder if any would have an interest in this. These movies also would not count against the Premiere Count.

Ten Premieres will be allowed.

The Challenge Requirement will be slightly unusual in that entrants will be allowed to use any general theme of their liking. The requirement will be aspect of movies. I hope that is sufficiently cryptic as to provoke confusion.

It is time to begin scribbling ideas for your entry!

Sounds like a great challenge SansFin! I'm looking forward to it.  I like the idea of being able to use Disney's animated films.  Regarding there being no specific overall challenge, this sounds like it'll be harder than it sounds.  I'm going to have to try and come up with something!  Will the Challenge theme be a specific theme that we have to label in our schedule? Is it different than all the other random themes we come up with?

The Challenge Requirement will be four movies in one evening which adhere to specific rule. I will reveal that rule when Challenge begins. I believe that it will require only a single line to indicate the evening in your schedule which meets the Challenge Requirement..

Genre and content of movies is not specified by Challenge Requirement.

I am happy that you have now committed to entering one of your wonderful schedules! :)

I was just thinking, since during the last challenge, we had issues with the challenge requirement post getting lost in the shuffle, is there a way that we can have the post "pinned" at the top of the forum just like the picture one is in the General Discussions one?

I know we have the programming challenge archive sub-section, but that one appears to be meant to archive the old challenges so that required themes aren't duplicated.

I know that during the last few challenges I've entered, I've found myself having to hunt for the rule post a couple times, just to make sure I've satisfied every requirement and haven't violated any rules prior to submitting my finished schedule.

It is my habit to separate general rules from Challenge-specific requirements. I place them as first posts within the thread and so a person need only go to first page of thread to find them. There is row of page numbers below subject line for each topic on board so that a person may go directly to which page they wish.

I believe the problem some had with the last Challenge was that those elements were placed into separate threads and one of those threads quickly fell from front page of board and so was difficult to find.

I hesitate to ask Moderator to place Challenge as sticky at top of board because of issues which have no relationship with Challenges.

It is sad to say that rules are long and seem very complex. The simple manner of thinking of them is that entry schedules must be in same format as actual schedules and must adhere to known restrictions of actual schedules.

Many others and I are at all times happy to answer any questions or to offer advice. :)

I can see that.  When I did the first challenge, I remember thinking that it seemed overwhelming at first; but once I broke it up into smaller chunks, it's not that difficult, it's the scheduling the films to fit specific time slots that is the most difficult.  I usually just check the rules again to see the premiere limit rules, required themes, allowed time frame, etc.   For me the last time, I was trying to schedule the required segments (foreign, silent, Essential, etc) and was scheduling them in my time zone, PST.  I was looking at my schedule, wondering why my evenings seemed so long, only to realize that I was supposed to be scheduling in EST.  Lol.

I think this go-around, I'll remember to use the right time zone.

Thanks SansFin.

Hmm.  I already have some ideas coming together for this challenge.  I think this latest info is going to allow me to do something I have been wanting to do for quite a while. So looking forward to this challenge.

I agree that the general challenge rules are long and, while necessary, need to be separated from the specific challenge requirements.  You can put them one after another in the thread when you post but, as we found out in Challenge #27, one post can easily get separated from the other!  Also, when you feel the time is right, let us know if the scheduled week should occur in 2015 or 2016.  That will be extremely helpful!

I see no harm in mentioning that now: the allowable timeframe will be: March 1, 2015 to February 27, 2016.

It makes me happy that we will have one of your wonderful schedules!
