Richard Kimble
seen it, did not like seeing Lundigan as a bad guy and it was most offbeat seeing Ryan as a good guy. remade as the abc movie of the week 'ordeal' with arthur hill, diana muldaur and earl holliman. For reasons I'm still not quite sure about, I happen to have watched Ordeal withing the last week or so. One thing -- it was James Stacy (in his last film before his motorcycle accident that literally cost him an arm and a leg) in the Lundigan role, not Earl Holliman (you're probably thinking of the TV movie Trapped, where Holliman did play the "other man" role). I've always found Muldaur incredibly dull (though she did look good in a bikini here) and IMHO Arthur Hill was rather monotoned and not terribly expressive. For me, surprisingly, the best performance was from Stacy. He brought a really sleazy vibe to his role, giving the Stacy-Muldauer meetings a noirish James M. Cain ambiance missing from the Fleming-Lundigan trysts in the original. The remake very unsatisfyingly (perhaps due to running time/budget limitations?) chose to stress the man-against-elements theme at the end and ignore the criminal lovers, so we don't even see what happens to them. Instead Hill walks into town very triumphantly, like a disease-of-the-week weepie. Inferno at least had a Ryan-Lundigan fistfight (in a burning cabin yet).
