Time for another-"For whatever reason, I used to confuse these two actors or actresses with one another" thread

...as after seeing that it's Dane Clark's birthday in Joe's "Candids 2" thread just now, I was reminded that I used to kind'a confuse him with Richard Conte.

And so, let's hear yours.

(...and remember, this kind of thread topic ISN'T necessarily about "lookalikes", but more about as I said "for whatever reason" you used to or maybe occasionally still do associate two different actors or actresses together, such as often playing similar types in films)

I always confuse Robert Young with Robert Montgomery.

Let's see: they both have the same first name - but that's the least of the similarities.

They're both roughly the same age, they're both American male "lead" type actors, they both appeared in numerous films in the 30s and 40s, they even played the same kind of guy a lot of the time, and I swear, they look almost exactly alike. (sometimes you can tell them apart by the twinkle in Robert Montgomery's eye.)

I can see how one might confuse Clark with Conte based on looks,  but not acting style.   Clark often overacted while Conte was low key (some might say borderline boring like George Raft).

Yeah, actually a good point here, James. Clark did often play more, lets say, "exuberant" types, though I wouldn't exactly call it "overacting", and whereas Conte was mostly cast as the more reserved type.

However, I never thought of Conte as "boring".

(...and certainly not anywhere as close to that stone-faced and monotone-voiced Raft...who should have just stuck with dancing The Bolero, 'cause yeah, THAT dude couldn't act at all...well, okay...he was pretty good in that Wilder comedy set in the '20s when he parodied himself, I guess)

Yeah, I can see this MissW, and for the same reasons you've just stated. Their physical builds were also similar, I'd say.

I have a good friend who can't tell the difference between Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Leonardo Di Caprio. The Departed drove him crazy because it had both Damon and Di Caprio--or was it Brad Pitt?

Cameron Mitchell/John Garfield are another pair of lookalikes, and Dane Clark was sort of a "poor man's Garfield," too.

Jean Peters and Jean Simmons. Every time I see either name in the credits of a film, I always have to look up "Niagara" on imdb to see which actress it is.

I'm sorry.  Aside from them both being known as "jean," they look alike.

I understand OP Dargo's original intent with this thread, there's a fine line between what he is looking for (actors who play similar roles and probably have similar acting styles)  and "lookalikes" where the two people physically look almost like twins, or at least look like brothers/sisters. And yet the two subjects almost have to overlap somewhat, and that causes the potential confusion.  Dargo's mentioning of Dane Clark / Richard  Conte is a great example; there's enough of a general physical resemblance there, they are of the same time period and play  similar film roles at times.  And then there is the point just made in Speeds' post, similar names (Jean's) with somewhat similar actresses of the same time period.  I can see where the unfamiliar film viewer can get easily  confused.  But as you get more "experience" viewing these films and researching just who these  people are you get things straightened out.  I for one am not very knowledgeable about more recent films (90s to present)  and the actors in them so I get easily confused with them.

The two had nothing in common except the first name. I imagine there were people who confused Marilyn Monroe and Marilyn Maxwell, who had things in common other than name.

It was only a couple of years ago that I realized with a shock that James Fox (THROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, A PASSAGE TO INDIA) and Edward Fox (THE DAY OF THE JACKAL, GANDHI) are two different people! I saw them infrequently enough that I guess their different first names didn't register in my memory banks.

You don't see the remarkable similarity between Richard Conte and seven hatted gunslingers, all of whom are named Dane Clarke?

No, actually dark, I think Fred might have been referring to Dane Clarke, who boasted a magnificent seven......inches!

(...that of course would be Dane Clarke the '70s porno star, NOT Dane Clark with the 1940's Warner Brothers contract)

;)

7 inches is not all that magnificent for a porn star. I think it's pretty much the minimum requirement.
