GUESS WHO?

We have the cast of "Stagecoach".  Thanks Princess and Lawrence.  Now we need the two women on the left side of the other photo.  The woman on the far left had a sister, also an actress, who once played the mother of Katherine Hepburn in a movie. Here is an earlier photo of that woman on the far left.

The other woman we are looking for is pictured here:

"The Women" was her first movie.

  Do you know them now?

This is a pretty easy one for me.  If you take these photos in pairs, you have actors and actresses from five movie serials.  In the first four pairs, you have the villain and the leading lady.  In the fifth, you have a female villain and a friend of the star.

#1 is Charles Middleton, who played Ming the Merciless in two Flash Gordon serials that starred Buster Crabbe.  #2 is Jean Rogers who played Dale Arden in those two serials.  The photo of Charles Middleton is actually from the first Batman serial.  It was shown on TCM last year.

#3, as Princess posted, is Lyle Talbot.  #4 is Noel Neill.  In the 1948 "Superman" serial, Talbot played Lex Luthor and Noel Neill played Lois Lane.  Of course, she also played Lois in the TV series, replacing Phyllis Coates after the first season.  Kirk Allyn played Superman in the serial.

#5 is I. Stanford Jolley, also known as Stan Jolley, a veteran of hundreds of movies and TV shows, mostly westerns and mostly in villain roles.  He played Professor Bryant in "King Of The Rocket Men". Tris Coffin played the hero, Jeff King.   # 6 is Mae Clarke.  She played Glenda Thomas in that serial.  You may remember her as the woman who got a grapefruit in the face from James Cagney in "The Public Enemy".  She was also in "Frankenstein".

#7 is Anthony Warde and #8 is Constance Moore.  In the 1939 serial "Buck Rogers" which starred Buster Crabbe, Warde played Killer Kane, and she played Wilma Dearing.

#9 is Dorothy Christy. and I believe that # 10 is a very young Frankie Darro.  They were both in 1935's "The Phantom Empire", which was one of Gene Autry's early films.  Dorothy Christy was the villain, Queen Tika.  Frankie Darro and Betsy King Ross were two kids that were friends of Gene, who had to help defeat the Muranians who lived beneath the earth.  Dorothy Christy played Stan Laurel's wife in the classic feature "Sons Of The Desert".  She also played the mother of Jane Withers in the Shirley Temple movie "Bright Eyes".  Her later career was spent mostly playing bit parts.  Frankie Darro played a lot of tough juvenile roles.  He starred in "Wild Boys Of The Road".  He was also in "Broadway Bill" as the jockey.

Sorry about that slip-up.  I was going from memory and I should have looked it up to make sure.  Do I still get the bonus points?

Now, recently we mentioned Billy and Bobby Mauch, identical twins who made several movies in the 1930's.  Hollywood has used twins for years, often using babies or young children to play one role.  Babies can't work for many hours and this way the film makers can get more scenes shot.  That is how the Olsen twins got started in TV.  Can you identify the following sets of twins?  These are real twins.  There is no trick photography here.  Please don't ask me which one is which.

2.  Who are the twins with Ann Sothern?

5.  These brothers were known for a TV show.

6.  These two sisters were also TV stars.

8.  These two sisters were famous, but not in movies or TV.

9.  I'll bet you know these two.

10.  You never saw these two together on TV.

I know a few of these -

#3 is Jill & Jacqueline Hennessy - Jill was a cast member of Law & Order and starred in Crossing Jordan.

#4 is Linda & Leslie Hamilton - Linda starred in the Terminator films and on TV's Beauty and the Beast.

#7 is Daisy & Violet Hilton - They were Siamese twins, and starred in the exploitation "classic" Chained for Life.

#9 is Tia & Tamera Mowry - They were kids stars on their own TV series Sister, Sister. I can't say that I ever saw it, but my nieces did.

#8 is a guess - is it Pauline & Esther Friedman, aka Dear Abby and Ann Landers?

Very good, Lawrence and Princess.  Now we need nos. 1, 5, 6, and 10.

The sisters in photo no. 1 started as band singers before appearing in movies.  They were once in a movie with Mickey Rooney.

In real life they actually married brothers.  I wonder if their kids looked alike.

The brothers in #5 were regulars on a long running musical variety show.

The sisters in # 6 starred in an 80's sitcom about twin sisters, one serious and the other fun-loving and laid back.  Here they are with the actor who played their father on the show.

The girls in #10 actually started as toddlers in a long running family drama series.

#6 are Jean & Liz Sagal. I recognized Donnelly Rhodes from your second picture and looked him up. That's from a short-lived show named Double Trouble (1984-85). It appears Jean segued into TV directing, while Liz is a writer. They also appeared in numerous TV shows and films.

Thanks Princess, Lawrence, Lavender, and Shutoo.  We have them all now.  The Sagal twins are the daughters of director Boris Sagal and the younger sisters of Katey Sagal, who played Peg Bundy on "Married With Children".  Before they were on "Double Trouble", the twins were featured in a Doublemint gum commercial.  They're the ones on jet skis.

Lawrence gets the thread.
